Skookum Glacier - Backcountry Ski Touring

This is an easy backcountry ski tour back to Skookum Glacier, which is near the Portage Glacier turnoff on the Seward Highway. The trip is 13 miles roundtrip with very little  elevation gain and is suitable for beginners. Bring plenty of warm clothing as we ski up into a valley with cold winds that blow off of the glacier. We'll be in wide valleys with minimal exposure to avalanche danger. As snowmachines are allowed back there this year we'll probably have packed trails to ski on, so backcountry skis probably aren't mandatory.

Plan on skiing 6 or 7 hours, depending on conditions. Bring lunch, snacks, water, other appropriate gear for the weather conditions, gas money for carpooling and wear layers. As usual, no dogs are allowed.

I was thinking of bringing back the St. Patrick's Day Skookum Ski this weekend. Any plans? Has anyone been south lately? I'm guessing the placer river is still frozen? Hope all is well! Travis

This was yet another great backcountry ski trip with an unbeatable setting for a picnic lunch; next to a tall wall of blue glacier ice. The snow is much deeper than last year. It snowed on us for a little while, then the sun came out and we had fantastic spring ski conditions. The snowmachines were a little noisy, but they were having fun in the fresh powder too.
