Level 5-South side of Pine Mountain scouting hike

Can't do Swampy Lakes this morning, so I'm going to do some recon and scrambling around on the south side of Pine Mountain later in the day. Could be some snow in places. I only have 5 people so we can all fit in my car. To get to the trail head is about 31 miles east of Bend. I'm going to try and take a quick drive sometime this week to see how the conditions are. I'll update later.

Saturday's forecast is sunny with highs in the mid 30's.

Only people that has done a level 5 or 6 can attend.

Hike will require some scrambling. Length: 5 miles ±.

Elevation gain: 1,000 to 1,400 feet.

Who knew there was such amazing country so close to Bend? Not easy hiking, for sure, with lots of scrambling. Aaron, your pictures are great, too!

Interesting hike. Lots of cool rocks to scramble on. Group did great working their way through the rocks. Great views! We didn't make the full planned hike, we were running out of day light. Still got it 6 miles and about 2400 feet of total ascent. Could be another Smith Rock type place without the river in a few hundred thousand years..

Aaron - I hate to back out at the last minute but I have a touch of the flu and don't think I would be able to do the hike...catch you next time.

Hi guys, sorry to inform you that Pine Mountain is effectively closed until March 31st. I tried to get there myself on 20th Jan. The roads are open but off-road off-trail travel is prohibited (Dec 1 - Mar 31) for a "Seasonal Wildlife Closure". I took two pictures of the closure sign which I will upload to the "Group Photo Album" in a moment.

Just talked to the Forest Service. The NF-23 road I want to take is open The roads off of 23 are closed, and no off road vehicles. Thanks for the heads up Rob..

I found order DES[masked] here http://www.docstoc.co... and it is a motorized vehicle closure. Why they made a sign that says "All travel off roads and trails prohibited!" without mentioning motorized vehicles at all is beyond me. Looks like you can go. Have fun. Sorry for the confusion.
