We'll walk east from the Santiam sno-park to the summer-time Pacific Crest Trail parking lot and from there walk roughly northwards to gain the ridge that extends southwards from Three Fingered Jack. We'll walk along that ridge for about a mile, with excellent views in all directions, to the base of the sharply ascending ridge shown in the picture below. If time permits we may ascend the lower part of the sharp ridge. We'll return the same way.
Level 4.5. Total ascent about 1200ft plus whatever we do up the sharp ridge. We'll go up for a maximum of 3.5hrs, have lunch, then turn around and walk back. I expect we'll be snowshoeing for 5.5-6hrs. Please make sure you've done a hike on dry trail of at least 12 miles and 1000ft height gain, in the last year, before you RSVP. Medium pace, I'm still recovering from a knee injury.
On this trip we'll be navigating using GPS-derived bearings, terrain, and map-derived bearings. If you want to lead bring a baseplate compass with a rotating bezel marked in degrees. Leading is optional.
Both ridges are corniced. I'll give a brief cornice safety 101 before we hike.
Slope angles on this hike are pretty moderate until we get to the sharp ridge. Even then, we will only ascend slopes under 25 degrees. We will certainly not ascend to the point where it becomes a fin. I'm hoping for sweeping unobstructed views to the south by climbing up the sharp ridge... but since this is the only part I didn't test hike there are no guarantees. Since the sharp ridge is at the end of the hike and we are coming back the same way, climbing up it is strictly optional.
Much of this hike is through trees killed by a forest fire several years ago. This makes for some great views... but it also leaves us very exposed to the wind. Please dress appropriately. It is pretty surreal and more than a little bleak.. you will never strike another match again after seeing this.
No guests. Every attendee must be a member of Meetup and RSVP in their own right. No dogs please.
Meet outside the Cascade Village Starbucks at 8am. Please park in the spaces along the highway, away from the stores. We'll carpool from there. We'll need drivers who will need snow tires. Sno-park passes are required. This is a longer trip than usual; drivers please note your mileage so your passengers know how much to chip in for gas.
This is a small group so please keep your RSVPs up to date. It isn't fair if someone on a waiting list doesn't get to go, or someone else is deterred from signing up at all, and then you no-show.
