Level 3 - Hike Iron Mt. (This is a Dog Friendly Hike)

  • July 7, 2013 · 9:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

This is a 3.4 mile out and back hike to the top of Iron Mt.'s lookout tower. There are over 300 species of flowering plants along this hike and the peak blooming season is early July. We will meet at the lower parking lot 0.2 miles along F S 15 off Hwy 20 approximately 35 miles east of Sweet Home. A NW Forest Pass is required to park. The trail starts at the parking lot and after .75 miles there is a crossing over a very busy Hwy 20 before continuing up to the top. If you are hiking with dogs, then be prepared to leash up for the Hwy crossing. The hike is a fairly steady climb with a final 1 mile of steep switch backs to the top. The views and the changing tapestry of flowers makes the effort worthwhile. We can take a lunch break at the lookout. Bring water for you and your dogs. I will have to meet everyone at the trailhead as I am camping at Clear Lake. If anyone wants to organize carpooling from Bend, please post on this site. It is about 1 hour from Bend to the trailhead so plan accordingly.

It was a very nice hike - a few more hikers on the trail due to the holiday weekend. The flowers aren't quite at their peak. Plenty of time to go again and see more color. Great people - Great Organizer - Thanks Barb !!!

I want to thank Bob Speik for adding the photos, Rob for providing GPS coordinates to the trail head and to Martina for volunteering to guide people out. Some people on the wait list will have to wait for the next trip that I hope Martina will want to post. In case you are still not sure where this is and how to get there, I am adding my "old-school" method of finding this. Just stay on Hwy 20 all the way until you turn left onto FS 15. It really is that simple. The one concern that you might have is that it might look like you have gone too far since you will be passing by the mountain before you find the trail head. However, that is correct. You will pass the mountain on your right then the highway starts to go down hill and then you will see FS 15 on your left. Its a short way in to the bathroom and the parking.

Carpooling is from Starbucks N. Hwy 97 in the Cascades Village Mall. Martina will be on the sidewalk at the entrance 7:45 A.M. Come up & give your name. 2nd spot: Sister's Ranger station. Be ready to join caravan @ 8:20 . 25 hikers, so please carpool! The goal is 7 cars. Think ahead about the return trip. Some will need to get right back, some will want to stop in Sisters.

If you have become accustomed to the informal but all too common 15 minute flexibility" rule" in getting to the meetup sites, remember others are waiting. Be courteous, be on time! If you will be in Sisters or up at the trail head send an e-mail. Click on my photo, click little box the reads e-mail and say you will be at Sisters Ranger Station 8:20 or trail head 9. Please do that now. If I don't get an e-mail I will assume you will be at Starbucks at 7:45.

Sorry about that. There really is only one of me. I'd love to catch a ride with someone. It's a great year to enjoy the early wildflowers and the amazing views.

I hope you follow up with posting another hike that includes Cone Peak. I know you will get a lot of people to join you.

have a great hike! i will do it another day...

    June 21, 2013

We are keeping this hike a level 3 up to the lookout and back out, as originally planned. Two additional hikes (one a dog-friendly weekday hike and a second loop hike including Cone Peak that is oriented to the hiker-photographer) are in the works. Look for those hikes to be scheduled at a future date.

    June 19, 2013

  • Joyce M.

    sounds good to me tom...

    June 18, 2013

  • tom

any chance of turning this into a loop that would include cone peak? cone peak has the spectacular meadow areas of flowers. that additional trail returns to the same parking lot, probably makes the hike 10-12 miles instead of 7.

By this time, most of you should know if you will be able to attend this hike or not. If you cannot attend, please go to RSVP's and change your RSVP to NO. That will move the next person on the waiting list up. It will give them time to make their plans to attend that day. It really sucks to get off the waiting list the day of the hike. It is usually too little notice to then attend, so please think seriously about whether you really can come or not and if the answer is NO then change your RSVP to NO now. Thank you.

Sorry. Church duties that day. Just realized. See y'all next time.

Sounds good Martina-- Let Aaron know if and when you decide to host a trip. He needs to give you the Meet Up tools to do it. I will be sending e-mails to every one you RSVPed in a week or so with some specific instructions regarding meeting up with you and arranging carpooling. I will put as little responsibility and burden on you as possible.

    June 7, 2013

  • Barb C.

Great turnout so far for people interested in this hike. A waitlist is forming. If your plans change, please go to RSVP and change your response to NO. that will open up a spot for someone who is waiting. The flowers will continue to come into bloom for several weeks. Maybe someone will volunteer to host a second hike for those who couldn't make this one.

    June 4, 2013

    • Martina M.

Hi Barb - I will volunteer to to host the next hike if this one goes well . Thinking that would be July 16 ( Tuesday morning) . I do not like to be the driver with new folks in the car - so if one off the waitlisted people gives me a ride , they will have a deal and a host .:-) I try to go there every year !

Carpooling to Iron Mt. will be from Starbucks in the Cascade Village mall for people coming from Bend. Meet Marlina there at 7:45 A.M. a second stop will be the Sisters Ranger station at the intersection of Hwy 20 and N. Pine, in Sisters (across from The Sno Cap). Be ready to join the caravan of cars from that location at 8:20 A.M.

Hi Martina--I would love some help. Would you be able to organize the carpool/caravan out to the trailhead? I am camping at Clear Lake and will be going directly to the trailhead from there. I won't have access to a computer after the 4th so if you could field any last minute questions, that would really help, too.

    May 28, 2013

    • Martina M.

Yes, I will! Just want to make sure that everyone looks up the trailhead and participates in finding it . The idea of being responsible for people in cars taking all the right turns makes me uncomfy - I hope peeps under stand that . But I 'll be glad to field questions while ou are camping and look forward to meeting you - an adventuresome woman who loves dogs souns like a kindred spirit to me:-)

      May 28, 2013

    • Rob

I've adjusted the map above (click "Trailhead parking lot...") to point exactly at the point where FS15 leaves Hwy 20. The lat/long of this point are [masked] [masked]) which you might be able to enter into car-based GPS systems so they can tell you when to turn. Finding the trailhead after that is left as an exercise for the reader... :)
