level 3P / photographers hike to cone peak

this is a suggested date, contingent upon feedback about status of wildflower blossoms.  if it's too soon, we'll try again on 7/8 or 7/15.

it's a 4-ish mile hike to cone peak meadows, some patches of flowers along the way but the meadows themselves are the justifiably-famous attraction.  steady climb, approx 4 miles and 1000 ft elevation gain. you'll need to be reasonably fit to carry all your camera and hiking gear that distance.

plan to spend at least an hour taking pictures once we arrive at cone peak.

afterward, we can make it a loop by crossing along the ridge to iron mountain and the lookout tower there, then returning to the parking lot.  this option adds an extra 2-ish hours to the day, compared with an out-and-back to cone peak only.  this loop would be about 10-12 miles total, but it too is worth the effort.

bring lunch, water, sunscreen, etc.

no dogs please.

6/25:   rain or overcast on hike day cancels/postpones, will send out confirming notice the evening before.

6/30:  it's a go!  i'll be at the meeting place @ 5:50, if anyone cares to join me be there by 6:00 when i leave.

Tom, those photos are spectacular! Even with a busted try-pod. If you ever go on a last minute photo adventure I would love to tag along.

my tripod fell apart in my hands after reaching cone peak, so i was unable to get sharp shots with any depth of field. have a few more to upload from my point and shoot, conditions were very good in the morning if a bit windy. the view in the distance was pretty hazy due to the heat. not a lot of flowers near/around iron mountain, most were on the trail to cone peak. did not climb up to the tower, so can't speak about that part of the trail.

I can't make July 1st (guests at my house)- but if you change the date to the 8th or 15th, then I can go.
