Green Lakes and Soda Creek

Green Lakes and Soda Creek is one of the classic hikes of the high Cascades. The total distance is around 11 miles with over 1000 feet of ascent. Is is an intermediate hike. We checked out the snow conditions on Saturday (3 July). There is still a lot of snow on the trail. It should have mostly cleared by the 17th but you should still be prepared to cross some big snowfields. Meet at Starbucks on Century Drive at 8am. Drivers need a forest pass.

This Green Lakes hike was one of the most fun, challenging and scenic treks I've ever been on! First of all, it was an absolutely gorgeous day, and the wildflowers were blooming everywhere. Having Jennifer along to identify them for us was such a treat, too. It was so clear and the sky so blue, that I felt I could almost reach out and touch Broken Top. On top of that, the remaining snow fields and high river/creek water levels made for some unique crossings/scrambling at times, which not only added to our great adventure but also brought out the true 'team spirit' one feels when hiking with such dedicated leaders as Tom and Hazel and great hiking-mates who were each always eager to lend one another a: helping hand, walking stick, extra pair of socks, or chunk of ice to cool down with. I had no idea when I signed up that this going to be such a fantastic hike and it is one that I'll long remember.

Soda Creek Trail was officially opened by us yesterday and what fun it was! This hike had it all: BLUEST skis I've seen this year, crossing rushing creeks on fallen logs, flowers you only see after a snow melt, random snow ball atacks, lunch at Green Lake while being awed by the grandeur of our surrondings. Thank you Tom & Hazel!

Was a very good experience. The hike was a bit longer then any of us expected due to the snow and issues with crossing the creeks, but with the weather we have had this year that really was not a big deal. My only thought is that a person better make sure they are up to this length of hike before signing on. While it was spectacular to experience it I also know it could be pretty miserable for those not ready for this.
