Difficult hike. On a good day - this is one of the finest hikes in Central Oregon (Tom's opinion). We start at three creeks lake then climb up to Tam Macarthur Rim with great views over Bend, Redmond and beyond. We then follow the "red ridge" to Broken Hand. This section has views of the basin between Broken Top, Middle and North Sister. Then comes the scrambly bit. There is no easy way around Broken Hand. One route scrambles through boulders. The other crosses a very loose cinder slope. We prefer the boulders. Finally we emerge on the ridge that leads to Broken Top. If everyone is feeling good we can follow the ridge to fantastic views of the Glacial Lake and the North face of Broken top. We return by the same route. Please note that there is some exposure to heights on the ridge. Distance - about 10 to 12 miles. Elevation gain - about 1500 feet. Time - about 6 hours. Meet at Starbucks in Cascade Village (by World Market and Best Buy) at 8am.
