As usual, Aaron knew right where he was headed, it was easy, views were boring, everybody loved the last uphill, and nobody had a ton of fun. Thanks Aaron!

I knew where I was going heading back to the cars. :) Did you sleep well that night?

Surprisingly, I wasn't sore yesterday. Rode my bike 40 miles. I guess the hike was too easy. (:

I seem to be over ambitious when it comes to doing some of these hikes. We didn't get to the second group of rocks.. Next time.
Thanks folks for working with me in this Exploring hike.
Glad everyone made it back safely..

Hi, I turned left at skull hollow cg and went about a mile, I've pulled off. No sign for grey butte, a guy with dogs said he thought official gray butte was on other side of hill. Evidently I'm by Cole butte? I'm in a red Honda crv on pull out down dirt road past skull hollow. May drive a little further...

    Aaron,

For me it is less of a drive to directly go to the Gray Butte TH. So unless it is an issue I'll meet the group there. I will plan to arrive at the trailhead at 8:15 AM.
    Thanks.

Can you pick me up in Redmond?

    January 14, 2014

Take the turn off to Smith Rock from 97, go about 5 miles to Lone Pine Road, turn left. Drive about 4.2 miles to Skull Hollow Campground turn off, from there turn left, follow the road to Gray Butte TH (about a mile)

    January 15, 2014

  • Anya

Where does the trailhead start? Will we park at Skull Hollow Campground? I may have to meet you there, but haven't only been to the main parking area of Smith Rock in the past.

Aaron - would also like to meet you at Freddie's (Fred Meyer) in Redmond @ 0800 if that works.

There are quite a few events going on this day in different meetup groups, if you have plans to do a different event, please change your RSVP for this one. Thanks!

I have yet to do an event with this group. I see there are people on the waiting list. Do you pay your dues then get on the waiting list & hope to get a spot for this event? How does this all work? Thank you!!

    January 10, 2014

    • Aaron

You can pay the dues online. I tell most people if you're the first 3-4 on non-wilderness hikes, just show up. We normal have a few no shows. Check site morning before if the weather is crappy too.

You guys crack me up! No this won't be as hard as that hike Barbrann, more of an exploring hike. You'll be guinea pigs on new places I have wanted to go.. :)

From what Steve and Barbrann have said I must say that I am really looking forward to this. I plan on coming home exhausted with a big smile.

My profile picture was from this hike we 2 years ago. It was taken about half way through the hike. The scramble started at this point and we did not go down the way we came up. It would of been to easy and boring. This my friends is a HIKE! Thanks Aaron for taking the time to do this one again but with some who knows what changes! YAY

    December 31, 2013

  • Aaron

Carolyn~What I have planned is kind of an out and back hike. Roughly about 2500 feet of elevation gain. Once we reach the rocks, you'll have a chance to do some scrambling.
Thanks Steve for some insight to (some) of my hikes.
I'm always looking for something a little different, challenging and fun!

    December 30, 2013

    • Aaron

Of course, weather will determine if we can do all of it.

      December 30, 2013

  • Steve S.

I'll throw my 2 cents in for those of you that are unsure about your ability to do an 'Aaron' hike. He hikes pretty fast; say equal to 3+ mph on flat terrain. We almost always do some scrambling (hand holds, loose rocks, unsure footing). We are never 100% sure of how fast or how hard his hikes will be (because he doesn't know either). It is always an adventure, and great fun, and yes, we are always dead tired at the end. You need to have good hiking fitness, good shoes, flexibility of mind and body. I'm not trying to scare anyone away; just don't expect a stroll along the Deschutes River Trail.

Is this 11 miles round trip? I have limited hiking conditioning, but am conditioned relative to mountain biking and cycling. Would I need to attend a meet up that was fewer miles?

    December 30, 2013

  • David T.

I'd love to go on this hike at Smith Rock, but truthfully, I'm now in shape for about a 5-mile hike.

    December 30, 2013

    • Aaron

Hopefully someday you can. As I told people before if you're not tired after my advanced or Intermediate hikes, I didn't do my job. :)
