Jefferson Park (SORRY, NO DOGS ON THIS HIKE)

to review....

those coming from bend can meet at the starbucks in cascade village shopping center (trader joe's, best buy).  arrive by 6:20, leave by 6:30.  i'll be at sisters coffee by 7:00, we'll do a quick assessment of carpooling assignments and head out from there.  3-4 cars will be needed, depending on their size.  i can take 3 total in my car, already have one passenger from redmond.  bring $5 for gas for the drivers, and a NW Forest Pass (one per car, i have mine).

the route from sisters takes us past black butte, suttle lake, and hoodoo ski area.  at the first junction, veer right on hwy 22 toward detroit lake.  after 21 miles, between mileposts 60 and 61, take a right onto whitewater road (#2243).  7.4 miles of good gravel road to the trailhead.

suggest you check this site tomorrow morning for last-minute cancellations.  drivers should leave on time.  we'll leave sisters coffee no later than 7:15.  if you're late to the carpool site, feel free to drive yourself to the trailhead.

Limited to 12 people. Please keep your RSVPs current.

A long hike but worth it for the views of Mt Jefferson and the lakes and meadows in the park. It was a pity the we got so strung out on the hike up and down. I enjoyed meeting and chatting with all the hikers

Giving up my spot to someone else. Obsidians in Eugene is doing this hike on the same day and a bit later. Although I will miss the opportunity to meet you lovely people, its a win-win situation!

  • Chris M.

So does this hike require a permit like obsidian trail?

    September 6, 2014

    • tom

no special permit needed. just a NW forest (or day use) parking pass for the trailhead.

let's keep an eye on the smoke as saturday approaches. my hike yesterday told me that it's wide-spread, perhaps a bit worse to the northwest. i don't mind if views aren't as nice, but don't want to be at risk of respiratory issues.

FYI each confirmation email gives a date and time in the upper right hand corner. That confirmation email may be the only way to determine the order everyone originally signed up.

It's possible that there is some issue with the way the names were organized on the RSVP list that I don't quite get. When I saw the list yesterday, Tracy was second right under tom, but she said that she RSVPed just recently and after a long list of others. Several other people have said that they were sure that they were some of the first people to RSVP but I saw them near the end. When I viewed the list it read: tom, Tracy, Carolyn, Angela, Annie, Susanna, Kristin, Richard, Linda Van Fossen, Dixie, John S., then Pamela.
This hike is still 9 days away so I think it is too early to panic if you find yourself on the waitlist.
If someone else wants to organize a second hike to this same area, let me know. If you would like to become an event host, e-mail me. I would like to see the answers to your profile questions that are meant to be a gauge of your hiking experience.
Any member can make a case to become an event host at any time.

I suspect that the list is reversed in order from the comments.

I want to offer my apologies to those confused by the group limit and the selection process. It was my error in setting up the hike, although I explained the limit in the description I did not know how to implement it in the Meetup software. I recruited Barb for help after it was too late - I did not expect such a quick response! She has been great in helping to fix my mess.

To those wanting to go but on the waiting list, I'd suggest you keep you eye on the event over the next 10 days or so. Plans change, surprises happen... invariably, the roster changes. If you REALLY want to go, check the listing at 6 AM on hike day to see who decided it is, in fact, way too early to get started on a hike.

I appreciate everyone's understanding and consideration, volunteering to cede a spot to others, etc. Remember too that this hike is in Sullivan's book, it's a well-known and well-maintained trail. Smaller groups should not hesitate to go on their own.

I think there is a problem with the meetup program. I signed up for this hike today, but there were others ahead of me. I know both Sue Foster and Pete Leroy were ahead of me. I was in a wait list position. Not sure if I got bumped up because of those with guests. If someone knows they signed up early and still are not one of the twelve, please take my spot and I'll move to the wait list

Since there's so much interest in this popular fall hike, could we find another leader to take those of us on the waiting list as a separate group, leaving 30 minutes later to avoid violating the 12 person group limit?

    September 3, 2014

  • Pete L.

    Okay, thanks Barb.

    September 3, 2014

  • Sue F.

Not to make a tough situation tougher, but could there be a timing error somehow? Like Chris, there were only 6 folks signed up when I got my confirmation at 2:45pm yesterday and was super looking forward to this hike... Felt lucky to get in in time! (Dixie was also on the list... ) I understand either way but had to ask!

You can't go by the number of pictures that you see on your screen. It only shows as many as it can at the time on the screen. You need to scroll down to see the entire list. You were not one of the first 12 when I viewed it this afternoon. Meetup lists people by first come first served and there were several people ahead of you Same answer for you Chris. There were 12 people ahead of you.

      September 3, 2014

    • Dixie B.

Yep, Sue was on the list early too!

      September 3, 2014

  • Barb C.

You are right Dixie, I did miss your name on the list. You were the tenth person. It should be corrected soon.

    September 3, 2014

    • Dixie B.

Barb, thank you....I'm back on, however, the truth is I was one of the first few people to sign up NOT THE 10th!

      September 3, 2014

    • Dixie B.

My confirmation notice indicates it was sent at 2:00pm on Tuesday 9/2/14.

The list read tom, Tracy, Carolyn, Angela, Annie, Susanna, Kristin, Richard, Linda Van Fossen, John Stockhan, and Pamela in that order. Those are the first 12 on the list. One person got bumped by Meetup because they had RSVPed as bringing a guest and guests can't b e added to this hike. They didn't have the option to be on the waitlst unless they reRSVP without a guest. It is a constraint set by Meetup and there wasn't another option for them. Pete got added when that member got bumped. I don't know why you feel like you were higher up on the list that that. That was the order that I saw. Meetup sets the list by the order that the RSVPs come in.

    September 3, 2014

  • Dixie B.

How did I end up on the waiting list? I was one of the first to sign up?????

    September 3, 2014

  • Chris M.

Hmmm. It said there were like 8 people signed up when I responded. Bummer.

    September 3, 2014

  • Barb C.

Okay, I think I have it figured out and the RSVP list is still open but only the first 12 will be able to go. Still no guests, folks. Too many members are waiting for a spot.

    September 3, 2014

  • Barb C.

I tried editing this meetup to change it to 12 people but it still says 21. I'm really not sure what the problem is. Only the first 12 people on the RSVP will be able to go. It is a Wilderness setting and the limit is 12 per group. Everyone on the list following Pamela will have to wait for an opening. NO GUESTS ON THIS ONE!! There are a lot of Bend Hiking Group members interested so let's keep this one for them. For now you will just have to keep checking to see in anyone drops out and that moves you up. tom will be able to print out the list and unfortunately only take the first 11 people with him. If anyone has an idea why I can;t reset this to 12, please let me know.

couple of things based on the below... bend hikers can meet at the Starbucks in the mall on 97 at the north end of town. Near Olive Garden (or is it Johnny Carinos?) leave by 6:30 to get to sisters by 7:00.

Second, I need to limit this hike to 12. at the moment we're over that limit, but inevitably someone will drop out prior to departure. I'll get the limit in place, once I figure out how to do so!

from sisters, we can take 3 cars. please respond here if you are willing to drive, and if so, if you have a NW Forest Pass.

Did this with friends a couple of
weeks ago, agree; it is a must do. The gravel road was closer to 7 miles.

Thanks for offering this one, Tom. I'm eager to join in on a group event!
