Level 5-Broken Top Glacier Lake and Crater hike

This has been an annual hike for years.

We'll either start from the Broken Top trailhead or Todd Lake. I'll let you know. If the road to the Broken Top Trail head is open we'll start there, if not...

This will be a 13-14 mile hike and difficult, lots of elevation and hiking on scree and rocks. If you have hiking poles, this will be a good time to bring them.

We'll hike to the glacier lake and then hike around to the crater.

Bring water and sun screen!

I will have a water filter to refill water bottles.

July 15, 2012-To do this hike, you have had to either, done this hike before or a similar one with the group. If you have never done a hike with the group or I feel you are unable to complete this hike, I will not allow you to participate. Sorry.

Please, no dogs.

July 29, 2012-I was reading the trail report. It sounds like there's still a lot of snow on the trail. This will make the hike very difficult, because we will have to start from the Todd Lake trail head. Which will make for a long hike on and off snow. I will still keep this hike on, but if it get to a point where it's not safe from post-holing leg injuries or losing the trail, we will turn back and try again in a few weeks.

Aaron did it again--another great hike. Fantastic scenery! Well worth the 13 mile effort.
Good friendly group to hike with. This is definently a do again.

I got home at around 5pm, showered, got a few quick things done / food / etc, and was in bed by 6:30pm. I slept 'til probably 7am the next day solid. Absolutely love this hike! I forgot to turn off my GPS off the trail, but when I got to 3rd and Revere, it said 39.8 miles, so total hiking distance was around 14-15mi. (Google maps says 24.9mi from Todd Lake to 3rd/Revere).

I am doing a solo trip up there so see you somewhere on the trail. It was beautiful up there tonight. Flowers blooming, snow melting fast and bugs a little better. Soda Creek is running high so crossing are wet. Not really any snow on the trail in the first 3 miles.

There are some of you that are signed up that I don't or have hiked with. I need to know what other hikes you have done that are similar to this that you have done otherwise, I can not allow you to go on this hike.

I was on Tam McArther rim yesterday and the trail up was fine. Of course snow is on the trails above the tree line.

What is distance and elevation gain to first good water? Trying to determine how much to carry. I also have a filter.

We should hit many places for good water. I'm not sure of distance, but from our past hikes, we hike pass a few run-off streams.

I am new to the group, so I haven't done any hikes like this with the group yet; I am definitely up for this, and can give some examples of my hiking resumee if needed.

I'd love to do this hike except that I'm just getting ready to do a 20 mile section hike on the Tahoe Rim Trail. Do you organize it only once a year?

    July 17, 2012

  • Aaron

I have no way to show that, but our elevation gain is about 2,000 feet. Last year we had a total ascent gain of about 6500 feet.
