This would be a car camping trip. Leave Sunday, hike Monday, and come home Tuesday. We can meet at my house.

Some details: Length of climb is about 11 miles, with about 4500 feet of elevation.

    Hi Michael-
Were there any tempting snowfields on your route at this time of summer?

Swift and Dryer Glaciers were in play to each side of Monitor Ridge trail. Would like to try the Worm Flows this winter and ski down.

Once in a lifetime!! 4400' in 5.5 miles was quite a challenge, with varing trail conditions...worth every step! Weather was relatively cool under some clouds and fog/haze, sun broke out in the afternoon, and steam cleared from the fumaroles often enough to give a great view of the entire crater...
Aaron, we thought about you often during this trip...wish you could have joined us, as you would have thoroughly enjoyed it!

Glad you guys went and had a great day. I'm planning a trip in early October.

Great Day. Excellent Hike. Though most guidebooks downplay its intensity (as Grade: 1, Class 1-2 and a Difficulty rating of 0) I found it to be a good challenge (like John described in his post). The non-technical scrambling up (and down) Monitor Ridge above the timberline combined with 1,300 ft or more of pumice slog to reach the top will test your endurance. But is totally worth it. Loved it and will do it again I'm sure.

    Hey Folks,
I'm not going to be able to go to Mt. St. Helens. I can try to sell the permits I have. Barbrann and John, it's to you if you want to still go. Michael, I can sell you my ticket if you still like to go. Let me know ASAP. Otherwise, I will try to sell the permits.

Mount St. Helens hiker in serious condition
    By The Columbian
Monday, July 9, 2012 Netsanet Habtu, 26, of Seattle was in serious condition Monday night at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center after a Saturday afternoon climbing accident on Mount St. Helens.

She was descending the mountain’s main climbing route by deliberately sliding on snow and ice. She lost control and slid an additional 300 yards, striking some rocks. She suffered head and facial injuries.

Note that there can still be temping snow slopes on August 9, 2013. Stay clear of any snow or have a helmet, ice axe and some simple skills.

I hate to say, but I might not be able to make this. Have some stuff going on with my wife and might need to stay home to take care of her. I will know more by the end of next week, hopefully.

Hang in there Aaron. Let me know if you need anything, or if there is anything I can do.

Looks like the Climbers Bivouac campground is first come, first serve. I think if we leave early Sunday morning and get to the campground early, we should be able to find a campsite. Hopefully!!

Have 'hiked' Mt St Helen"s twice, so beautiful at the top peering over the edge into the crater. Enjoyed that our leader alternated hiking on snow, and rock/scree : ). Just a lovely day, great views from the top!

I see that Monday August 5th is still available. We could climb that day. That would mean we leave Sunday, come back Tuesday.

I'm really sorry. I had no idea that the permits would sell off within 2 hours. I would have bought more than one. I didn't realize the permit was for just one person. When I went back to buy more, it was sold out.

  • John T.

Ranger said it's been an unbelievable 2/1 sale day, that there might be some permit drop-outs, but probably not as a group. Did ANYONE get in for an 8/3 permit?
    Schedule a weekdays trip?
