The ten essentials is now a "systems based" list of the types of things that one should take with them on any sort of outdoor adventure. Navigation aids(maps, compass,etc.), Shelter (Tarp, Bivy, etc.), and Extra food/clothing are all examples of the Ten Essentials system. Although there will be multiple items that are always on the list ( a way to make fire for instance) the type and quantity of items will vary depending on the situation.
