Announcing a new meeting for The Bend Hiking Meetup Group!

What: Alder Creek and the Deschutes River Gorge

When: Saturday, May 10, 8:30 AM

Where: Click the link below to find out!

Who should come: Moderately fit hikers. This is an 8 mile hike with all of the uphill in the last mile. The hike also involves fording a 20 foot wide creek.

Why: Great hike, good company.

Meeting Description: It's Spring in the High Desert and time for our annual hike to Alder creek. The hike takes us down the valley of Wychus Creek to its junction with the Deschutes river. From the trailhead we drop some 400 feet into the canyon then hike approximately 4 miles to the junction of the two rivers. On the way we pass some great lava formations, ford the creek and finally pass through a stretch of forest that's more reminiscent of Costa Rica than Central Oregon.

The highpoint of the day is fording the creek. It is about 20 feet wide, knee deep and can be bitterly cold. It is a good idea to bring some water sandals for this.

This is not a difficult hike but you should be aware that (a) it can be warm in the Canyon at this time of year and (b) the last mile is a relentless uphill climb.

Meet us at Starbucks in the Cascades Village shopping center (next to World Market) at 8:30am. We'll carpool. The drive does involve a couple of miles along a roughish road so we would appreciate drivers with SUV's for this one.

For Redmond hikers we can arrange to meet you in Terrebonne.

p.s. We did this hike last year so you can see photos on this website.
