I've put up a poll to gauge interest in some ideas I've been kicking around: http://www.meetup.com/hiking-309/polls/198890/.  If you're interested in any of them, it's in your best interest to let me know as I'll be planning trips based on the response I get.  :-)

Subject: [hiking-309] The Hiking group

Hi Folks,

It is now more than 2 years since we started the Bend Hiking group. Over that time the group has grown to almost 300 members and we have organized more than 70 hikes. To accommodate some of the wide range of interests and abilities in the group we are planning to organize a wider variety of hikes in the future. In addition to the "mainstream" hikes we have started to add some more advanced backpacking trips that are intended for more experienced hikers. Molly has led a couple of these and she will continue to add trips over the Summer and Fall. Todd West will also organize some more advanced trips - maybe including some summit scrambles.

In future, we will grade the hikes so that you can judge which ones you feel comfortable with. The grading system for non-Winter hikes will be:-

Easy - suitable for all experience levels. 3-4 miles. Possibly an evening hike. No scrambling. Example - Shevlin Park.

Moderate - a short day trip suitable for most people. No scrambling but may be around 8 miles with up to 1000 feet of ascent. Example - Green Lakes, Gray Butte, Glacial Lake at Broken Top.

Difficult - a full day trip suitable for fit hikers only. May be more than 10 miles and may involve over 2000 feet of ascent. May involve some rough terrain or scrambling. Examples - Mt Bachelor, Camp lakes, Mill Creek.

Most Difficult - a very long day hike (more than 10 hours) with more than 15 miles of hiking and more than 3000 feet of ascent and possibly some serious scrambling. Or - an overnight backpacking trip to a remote destination. Examples - South Sister, Middle Sister, Wilderness Backpacking.

The "mainstream" hikes will mostly fall into the Moderate or Difficult category.

Before signing up for a "Most Difficult" category hike or backpack you should have hiked at least twice with the group, you must be well equipped and the group leader must feel confident that you are capable of completing the hike. Please read the descriptions carefully and don't sign up for hikes beyond your ability. We don't want any drama.

Tom
