PhotoWalk: Let There Be Light 2013 (PVCC)

  • Dec 13, 2013 · 5:30 PM

Let There Be Light is the seventh annual, one-night, outdoor art exhibition that will feature light-centered art installations and dance performances as the longest night of the year approaches – eighty days before the winter solstice. Nineteen local and regional artists will be participating. Visitors are invited to come as “enlightened beings” decorated in light. Everyone is encouraged to bring a flashlight. Hot chocolate, warm apple cider and tasty treats will be served to warm visitors. The event is curated by James Yates.

I attended last year and got several long exposures shoots

Here is a chance to do some long exposure/light-painting type shooting... bring a tri-pod ...remote release and hand warmers... :-)
Sunset is at 4:55pm with a 77% moon that might be right overhead by Sunset. And it's Friday the 13th!!! I scheduled the meet-up for 5:15pm...but if enough people want to try and meet-up before sunset (so we can find each other) time can be moved to 4:30pm. Last year it was pretty cold and well attended.
admission FREE

Also The Richmond Photography Meet-up Group is doing a PhotoWalk :
Lewis Ginter Festival of Lights
Sunday, December 15, 2013

Brrrrrr....just changed my RSVP to NO. I think it's going to be too cold and windy. Have a great time to those who go. I'll be looking forward to seeing some photos.

OK I'm getting more and more e-mails about late arrivals :-) ... So lets say Meetup time is 5:30- 5:45 . I will get there around 5pm to do some recon then head back to V. Earl Dickinson at 5:30 to meet folks...maybe this will be a little easier on schedules. Hopefully we'll not be too far ahead of those arriving late. Just trying to accommodate folks :-)

I will not be there on time. Should I change my rsvp?
I will be there around 6:30 after my son's bball game. I have Rick's phone number and planned to text.

no... I think this close to the event and not a huge waiting list I am going to extend RSVP number to allow the 2 on waiting list in... with people coming at different times should be somewhat manageable (?)

Some quick notes on camera setup
    1) Turn off “Long Exposure Noise Reduction” or “Long Exp. NR”
I suggest shooting at ISO 100 or 200 so you shouldn’t need the extra NR
    2) Might as well turn off “High ISO NR” too in case you do go above ISO[masked]) White Balance: I shoot RAW so my white balance setting isn’t really impacted other than the JPEG that shows up on my Camera LCD. IF you shoot JPEG you might want to experiment with tungsten or incandescent

As you can tell, shooting long exposure night shots, will make you learn a lot about your camera and settings ☺

Thought I would share my checklist as I prep my bag tonight for tomorrow:

2 fully charged batteries for D7100
2 fully charged batteries for FujiX100
2 IR Nikon Remotes (1 to loan to a Nikon shooter)
1 Cable Shutter Release for FujiX100
2 Tri-pods (1 to loan out if needed)
    2 32GB SD cards
    1 24mm F/2.8 (Aperture doesn’t really matter shooting F/8-F/22)
    1 35mm F/1.8(Aperture doesn’t really matter shooting F/8-F/22)
    2 Headlamp/Flashlight
    1 Set of gloves
4 Spare AA batteries (you never know)
1 Small blanket/throw to kneel, lay or sit on (I like to shoot from low angles)

Does anyone have a remote switch I can borrow that will fit a Canon 50D? It has an N3 socket, so I cannot use my old one. Grr. . .

Hi Rick, I have changed my rsvp to no only because I won't be able to be there on time, I am going to try to get there later, but probably won't be until after 7pm. will look for any brave and frozen photographers who match still be there!

Shooting photos is about the event. Not about how "safe" and "warm" the photographer is. If that were the standard, many events would never be shot. For those whose profiles gush with their "love" and "passion" for photography the weather won't be an issue.

Life is often uncomfortable. Photography should be too.

    Folks:
If the ever changing weather forecast this past week taught us anything, it’s the weather can change quickly. As of right now the forecast for Dec.13th is low of 30 degrees with a 6mph wind, so per wind chill calculator we could be in temperatures between 24-28 degrees. That’s down right cold; I am leaning towards “too cold” to really shoot safely (possible ice) and comfortably. Please think this over. I have not canceled the PhotoWalk, and will monitor weather forecast closely, but if it continues to look like sub-freezing temperatures for Friday night, cancelation might be the most prudent course of action. The point is to have fun and shoot interesting things…not freeze our buns off.
