Mastering Landscape Photography with Ben Greenberg

Please join us as we host local landscape photographer Ben Greenberg for a 3 day weekend workshop focusing on capturing quality photographs of the natural environment.

From the instructor:

The goal of the workshop is to help persons interested in landscape and nature photography learn how to improve their skills in capturing quality images in the field. The workshop will provide opportunities to discuss important aspects of capturing successful images, to take photographs in two nearby locations during an afternoon of shooting, and to view and critique photographs taken in the field. The critiques will permit an open discussion by all participants and the sharing of help and advice by all. Emphasis will be placed on such important characteristics of strong photographs as composition, balance, lighting, exposure, and sharpness. Participants will be expected to be thoroughly familiar with their camera equipment and its usage. Either digital or film cameras may be used by participants, but the experience will be enhanced with cameras that have the capability of overriding automatic settings with manual choices.

Ben Greenberg is a lifelong resident of Virginia who moved back to Charlottesville in 2002. He has photographed scenic locations throughout Virginia and the nation for more than forty years. His photographs have won local and national awards and competitions and have been featured in numerous individual and group shows. His images can be found on his web site, www.bengreenberg.com, and are available in central Virginia shows, galleries and shops. Ben’s dramatic photographs reflect his uncompromising commitment to capturing the natural beauty of his subjects under the very best conditions. This commitment frequently involves multiple trips to shooting locations and the patience to wait until there is the perfect combination of conditions, lighting and subject matter. As Ben likes to say, “the harder I work, the luckier I get”. Ben is well-known for his commitment to mentoring and helping photographers interested in improving their skills and their images. Join Ben in an interesting and inspiring weekend devoted to capturing quality landscape photographs.

I really enjoyed it. Ben is a very supportive, nice person and I really enjoyed his thoroughness. A great photographer and a great teacher! I would like more time in the field earlier in the morning if at all possible.

Thanks so much, and we plan to offer a great selection of programming as we move into Q1 of 2013! I loved this workshop, and I'm super glad you found value in it. We will have Ben back in the spring I think.

i enjoyed this workshop a great deal - i came away with a lot to think about, and much to work on. I agree that it would be great to be in the field earlier in the a.m, later in the p.m if possible. I thought Ben was masterful at giving us feedback in a constructive, helpful manner - i loved getting feedback from everyone and seeing what others do/don't see in an image. The CPI support from Chrisitian and G. is awesome. I think it would be helpful if we were required to jot down the camera setting for each image we bring since that was often useful info to have at hand. Thanks very much Ben for sharing your expertise.

I got a lot out of this. Ben offered specific techniques, guidelines, and considerations. He and the group provided helpful critiques without judging based on personal preference. I would like a workshop with "lecture" and critique, then shooting with critique, and another session the following weekend to allow time to shoot on my own and incorporate what I learned. I am looking forward to a spring workshop with Ben!

Ben is such a kind and considerate teacher with always a kind word to be given. I am looking forward to seeing his Panorama book when published - should be fantastic!

This was a good learning opportunity, even if the weather was less than cooperative. Ben is a good teacher, very thorough and articulate when discussing his approach to landscape photography, and he lead critiques with kindness and tact, but also with with a critical eye.

Ben's enthusiasm for the group to have a positive learning experience carried the weekend!

I've got a sick child, and I have personally been exposed to strep. Altho I don't appear to have it.. Yet.... I am stepping out of the workshop to prevent others from potentially getting sick.. Have fun, all.

It has been a great workshop this weekend. I have thoroughly enjoyed leading the workshop and working with a wonderful group of people devoted to improving their photography skills. I am looking forward to the last session today where we will be discussing images created during our shooting in the field yesterday. Despite not having the best of lighting conditions, I was very impressed with everyone's efforts yesterday. I know we will have another positive opportunity today to share information and improve our photography skills, techniques and vision. Thanks go to Chris and G for their support and help throughout the weekend.

Hi Polly, I think most of us could use some help organizing our photos! Yes, if everyone could have 3 photos up before the workshop begins Friday night, that will help speed things along. Thanks.

  • Polly King

Thanks for creating the album, G! There are some wonderful photos already uploaded! If more than 3, should we pare down before tomorrow night? (I loaded 4 and then deleted one.) This has made painfully clear how poorly my photos are "organized" in Lightroom!

G, I am happy to do so. A long time ago I sent her a response through CPI but I don't know for sure that Gina got it. I didn't use this space. Participants can feel free to bring whatever images they would like.

Hi Ben, when you have a chance, could you comment on Gina's question, "Do the photos we bring in need to be landscapes?". Thanks!

Kas, I've used a bunch of different tripods and have found the Gitzo and the Really Right Stuff to be the best, sturdiest, and lightest. I've got several and would be willing to show you them if yoi're interested. I've also got a few

KAS, I am new to CPI. How do I find what you left on the message forum? I will be happy to share some thoughts with you regarding tripods.
