Journey to the Desert and the Stars!
c/o Astronomy Professor Dean Arvidson

Inviting you to join the Twilight Hikers for the second annual 'Journey to the Desert and the Stars' in beautiful Palms Springs & Joshua Tree National Park on the weekend of June 18-19th, 2011.

Departure is at 7AM Saturday morning (June 18th) in carpools from Stoner Recreation Center Parking lot ~ 1835 Stoner Ave - LA, 90025 (on SW corner of entire one block park property). There will be the Palms Springs tram ($23.25 reg. price tickets or $21.25 for seniors over 60 years which can be bought online in advance which is advisable so as to save time when there) taken upon arrival in Palm Springs, an 11 mile hike along the San Jacinto Trail, eating lunch along the way, return down the tram, a stop at the market to pick up dinner goods (& perhaps breakfast goods) to have at the campsite and then over to Indian Cove Campgrounds in Joshua Tree to set up camp, eat and do some star gazing per the courtesy of Dean's telescope.  We sleep there just the one night and on Sunday we will have a leasurely morning enjoying the wildlife, the calm EMF free atmosphere, then break camp and head to experience the Integratron ($10 fee), the dome in Joshua Tree that has been made into an extraordinary sound bath. When this and a meal out together is complete, we return to LA in the evening.

We have group campsite #8 reserved at Indian Cove campground for Saturday night (total reservation cost is $25), June 18th. Please note there is no running water at this camping location.

If you prefer to arrive on Sunday, that works fine too... making it a day trip and returning on Sunday evening.

So cost breakdown in addition to food and gas includes:
- the tram ride round-trip ticket is $23.25 reg. price tickets or $21.25 for seniors over 60 years which can be bought online in advance which is advisable so as to save time when there)
your share for the campsite (total reservation cost is $25) whatever that breaks down to per the number of people that come
- the Integratron at $10 each

Pack accordingly i.e.:
- camping gear
- layer warm clothes
- hike-sturdy footwear
- water both to drink and wash with as there is no running water at the campsite

Hi Avishag. Looks like you went to the Sunday entry (which we didn't necessarily expect people to RSVP on both), rather you RSVPd on the Sat entry which is fine. If you want to see that page it is at http://www.meetup.com/TheGATEWA...

The drive there was a cinch; seemed like no time at all. Once we all found eachother at the tramway, the hike to 9700 elevation was bliss. Headed to the market for provisions and then to set up camp. Ate, played, connected, watched the moon, Saturn and various stars until snoozetime. A perfect unplugging opportunity. Thank you Dean, thank you all.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
