Low-key vs High Key with Len Cook and Miss Anya

"Low-key" and "high-key" are familiar phrases in photography. They describe a general characteristic of an image.  An image that conveys a sense of darkness overall is "low-key."  Conversely, an image that conveys a sense of encompassing light and brightness overall is "high-key."  Seems easy enough, but like most every other creative process, a little guidance goes a long way toward understanding technique.

In this workshop we will create both types of images and examine some of the techniques in achieving goals and avoiding problems.  Examples include the need for brightness in a low-key image, and the value of saturation in a high-key image.

Len Cook will be joining us at the LIGHTHOUSE again!  Len has been a professional photographer since about the time our model's mother was born.  His wit and humor is always a pleasure to be around!  He has taught photography and Photoshop as a college instructor for more than 6 years. Len teaches at his Fremont photo studio which you can check out at and also through the Fremont Recreation Department.  He's an incredible instructor and always a crowd pleaser.

Our model for this event is Miss Anya.  She's our first professional local model based in Redwood City.  Anya is a fantastically expressive art model and very deliberate with her poses.  She knows how to work the light and will be a wonderful addition in helping to capture the differences in lighting styles.  you can see some of her work at:
