Vegan Book Group

Greetings, worthy thanes:

Stacey has graciously handed the literary baton to me, and I solicit your suggestions for the next Vegan book group.  I would like to set a meeting schedule and pick the next two to three books.  I read at a glacial pace (well, a glacier unaffected by climate change, that is), and I confess that I found myself a bit rushed with the breakneck book-a-month pace that a reader of Stacey's intellectual alacrity could set.  I'd prefer to continue meeting Tuesdays, but preferrably bi-monthly.   That would put our next meeting at 28 Feb 2012.

As for books, I've a couple I think would be interesting, and I've had suggestions from others.  Please review the books I've tentatively selected below.  Let me know your individual preferences, and, depending on popular sentiment, I'll shift the order or add other books.  Please let me know.  For those interested, I've found that the occasional post-discussion tipple at Doyle's is a pleasant end to the evening.  Anyone who'd like to join me is always welcome.

Tally ho!

PS, I've updated the book list, which had initially reflected my unavailable choices.  jps

Feb: Natterson-Horowitz, Zoobiquity

April: Ozeki, My year of meats

June:  Mueller, Art of Racing in the Rain

Aug: ?

Sorry I missed it! I actually showed up early but got called back home to help deal with an issue with our elderly dog. Hopefully I'll catch up with everyone next time!

Thanks for the great description, Denise!
I am about half way through the book - a good read, mixing humor and serious animal-food issues.

When Jane Takagi-Little finally lands a job-producing a Japanese television show sponsored by BEEF-EX, an organization promoting the export of U.S. meats-she takes her crew on the road in search of all-American wives cooking all-American meat. Over the course of filming, though, Jane makes a few troubling discoveries about both. Meanwhile, on the other side of the globe, in Japan, Akiko Ueno watches My American Wife! and diligently prepares Coca-Cola Roast and Panfried Prairie Oysters for her husband, John, (the ad-agency rep for the show's sponsor). As Akiko fills out his questionnaires, rating each show on Authenticity, Wholesomeness, and Deliciousness of Meat, certain ominous questions about her own life-and the fact that after each meal she has to go to the bathroom and throw up-begin to surface.
