Who's in It: Penélope Cruz, Carmen Maura, Lola Dueñas, Blanca Prtillo
The Basics: A young mother in Madrid (Cruz) has to deal with the death of her husband and a sudden descent into financial difficulty that forces her to "adopt" an unused restaurant to make ends meet. Then the ghost of her dead mother shows up to address unfinished mother-daughter business. The upside is that ghosts don't eat much. (from movies.com)
VOLVER is not a surrealistic comedy although it may seem so at times. The living and the dead coexist without any discord, causing situations that are either hilarious or filled with a deep, genuine emotion. It's a film about the culture of death in [the director's] native La Mancha. The people there practice it with an admirable naturalness. The way in which the dead continue to be present in their lives, the richness and humanity of their rites mean that the dead never die. (from mygalaxy.com)
Additional Info:
The movie is in Spanish with English subtitles.
Cruz wore prosthetic buttocks in this movie. Almodóvar wanted her to be more real-lady and less actressy, without making her get all Robert De Niro and gain 40 actual pounds.
