  • This location is shown only to members

On Sunday, March 9th - We will be seeing 'The Wind Rises' at the Maple theater.  This movie is dubbed in English.

meeting spot: Please meet in the lobby by the bar & the fireplace @ 7pm

Showtime: 7:30pm

Plot: Jiro dreams of flying and designing beautiful airplanes, inspired by the famous Italian aeronautical designer Caproni. Nearsighted from a young age and unable to be a pilot, Jiro joins a major Japanese engineering company in 1927 and becomes one of the world’s most innovative and accomplished airplane designers. The film chronicles much of his life, depicting key historical events, including the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, the Great Depression, the tuberculosis epidemic and Japan’s plunge into war. Jiro meets and falls in love with Nahoko, and grows and cherishes his friendship with his colleague Honjo. Writer and director Hayao Miyazaki pays tribute to engineer Jiro Horikoshi and author Tatsuo Hori in this epic tale of love, perseverance, and the challenges of living and making choices in a turbulent world.

Really enjoyed the movie. Had all the hallmarks of a Miyazaki film plus a bit more considering it's his last one. Unlike other Miyazaki films, the tragic situation made it all the more poignant. Also enjoyed the company of everyone. Heard some great thoughts and perspectives. I will certainly return for future meetups.

Although you guys didn't see me I was there too! I My favorite parts were when the earthquake rolled through the city and did anyone notice certain sound effects (the rumble of the earthquake, the plane engines) were made by human voices? And when the main charecter was sitting at his desk adjusting and readjusting himself and drawing those scimatics up - mind blown. I'm up for seeing it again!

We're not a "private club" or anything. Friends and guests are always welcome. :)

Well said, Martin. I am so sorry I missed this one. And the discussion sounds like it was good, too.

I enjoyed the animation, the light contrasting with dark to create realistic looking shadowing and features. One of my favorite pieces was the sky mirrored over the face and eyeglasses of young Jiro. Am glad I signed up for this one. Very pleased.

Can't make because of surgery. So very sorry to miss it. Hope to be well enough to see it before it leaves. If I'm able to walk, I may still make it, but I can't count on it :-(

Hope you can make it. How are you doing?

A little more challenging than I thought it might be. Won't be coming to this meet-up. Not walking very well, yet. Pain is a real bother, too. Enjoy! Look forward to the comments. Take good care, Riley.

I wish Meetup had a "Maybe" option, since I'm just putting myself down tentatively for the time being.
