A Memoir, a Monologue, an Essay, or Personal Essay, or an Impersonal Essay for that matter... Call it all Creative Non-Fiction. That's who this group is for: Writers of Creative Non-fiction.

In other words, this is a group of folks who write travelogues through our respective Three Pound Universes. Is your Prime Literary Directive, "It's All About Me!"? Then this group may be for you.

Sure, creative non-fiction calls on all the tools and skills of great storytelling, but this here group is NOT about fiction writing. No novels, poetry, short stories, S/F, mysteries, young adult angst, Chick Lit or chic lit, et al.

And this is not for beginners. Nor is it a group for astonishingly gifted and immensely talented people who talk  endlessly and entrancingly about writing-- but never get around to doing much of it.

Members of this group are working writers. That means, they write. A lot. Their problem is not a lack of ideas or work ethic or projects. More likely their problem is that life is too flipping short to get done all the writing they want to get done. Or that they need to kill their Great Aunt Suzie and claim their inheritance so they can quit the time-sucking day job and spend more time writing...

Membership is Limited.

I'm thinking rather than submissions in advance, maybe we'll all bring some work to share in the first couple of meetings, and the folks who want to join and be active in the group will discover it through the process of reading and responding.

This is a writing workshop. But it ain't one of them destroy-everyone-else-and-be-the-last-one-standing-MFA workshops. We encourage one another. We may even accidentally inspire one another. To write more, to write the best we can at the moment, to write the story that we and only we can write.

We don't really care about Publishing--that's for you to do and pursue on your own time. This is a writing workshop. (Repetition is literary technique, yes?;-)

We meet twice a month, usually in a member's home. We socialize a bit, crack jokes, make one another laugh and smile and breathe deep, relaxing into the company of like-minded fellow travelers. Then we work.

We never mess with a writer's voice--only with the words they've put down on paper. In fact, we help one another clear away the rubble of words to better hear the writer's voice, feel what they want us to feel, as they take us on a guided tour of their unique Three Pound Universe.

-----

Yes, there will be Rules. We'll start with a few, and revise them as we go forward.

Here be The Rules:

  • We'll meet twice a month
  • We'll submit work in advance of the meetings, giving folks time to peruse and formulate brilliant insights
  • We will not read our own work at the meetings (If the only voice you ever hear encountering your writing is YOURS, you are missing a world of valuable info on making your work mo' better.)
  • We will play Random Sentence Check
  • We will bring enough copies of our work for all attending the meeting
  • We will give verbal responses to the work in the meeting, and written notes on our copies, and use email for sending the brilliant ideas and insights that didn't occur to us until driving home after the meeting
