Claremont Canyon Sunset Hike! Saturday Afternoon/Evening!

Today we are celebrating the eve of Martin Luther King's birthday and the fact that the moon will be 88% full (in order of importance!) : )

We will meet at the entrance to the park at the end of Stonewall Road and should be back by 6:30 PM. The total hike is 6-7 miles round trip.

The hike is STEEP at the start, but we will only be “climbing” for about 40 minutes before it gets flat-ish. Along the way will pass a lovely redwood forest, amazing views and a flowing stream. Although we won’t be going fast (shooting for a moderate pace), we won’t be stopping for breaks along the way either, so if you don’t like steep trails, or need to take breaks on a 3 hour hike that includes 2 steep climbs, this won’t be a fun one for you.

Bring water (!!!), flashlights if you have them (!), and layers (as the weather can turn cooler when the sun sets!). If you tend to get hungry while hiking, bring snacks that are easy to consume as you hike as we plan to be walking all of the time. There i.s a small chance of mosquitos, depending on the weather that day, so not a horrible idea to bring something to fend them off, if you are worried about that The views along the way will be amazing and it is lovely to see the light change at this time of day. This is a great place to watch the sun set and towards the end of the hike it should be nice and cool. We will also pass some redwoods and a stream, so a bit of everything! That said, by agreeing to go on this hike, you take full responsibility (legal and otherwise) for your own health and safety. Neither the leader of the hike nor the group are responsible for you, you are. So if you are not sure you can handle it or need to go back early, it is your responsibility to take care of yourself. (In short, you can't sue anyone in this group or the hike leader if you have an accident or get ill...; ) GETTING THERE:
To reach the Stonewall trailhead entrance from Highway 24, exit Fish Ranch Road immediately east of the Caldecott Tunnel. Go up Fish Ranch Road about one mile to the four-way stop. Continue through the stop; Fish Ranch becomes Claremont Ave. Continue for about 3 miles. Make a right onto Stonewall Road and continue for approximately up the road for about 1/10 a mile to the trailhead. Option 2 is to park on Tanglewood, which is one block west of Stonewall. There is a little path/sidewalk that goes straight to the
trailhead (about a 4 minute walk). We may (stay tuned) have an Optional Dinner AFTER the Hike: (still up in the air)
(If we do it, you will be emailed with the info. This would be optional and would be somewhere near the Rockridge BART). CARPOOLING ENCOURAGED- Saves gas, good for the earth, and all that. To offer a ride, just add it to your comment when you RSVP. However, to find a ride, please contact someone who RSVPed and either lives near you and/or said they could offer a ride. (I am riding my bike there). A good place for carpoolers to meet would be the Rockridge BART station which is not too far from the trail head. From there, just drive on college to Claremont Avenue, head east on Claremont, and turn left at Stonewall Road. (Or Tanglewood which is right before Stonewall). Park on either of those and head to the trail, which starts on Stonewall (Its a rather hard to miss trail head, and is right next to 97 Stonewall, which is a private home). IMPORTANT: We are leaving at 3:15 PM sharp so that we can take advantage of the light before darkness hits. This means if you are late, it is your job to catch up with the group!!!

RAIN CANCELS! (No need to change your RSVP if it is pouring rain. I will just assume no one is coming and I will reschedule. : )

I will continue leading these hikes, but since 95% of the folks that sign up sign up on Bay Area Social Club, that is where I will be posting them starting in February. So if you want to come on a future hike, just join BASC. Thanks!

p.s. 20 signed up there and 2 here. I hope that helps explain why I am shifting to just listing there. : )
