Join us for The Heiress, a play based on American writer Henry James' novel Washington Square. The show will be presented by Stage Centre Productions at the Fairview Library Theatre in North York.
The theatre is giving our group a discount of more than 45 per cent off regular adult tickets.
Catherine Sloper is painfully shy and socially awkward. She lives with her father, Dr. Austin Sloper, in 1850s New York.
By all accounts, Catherine’s mother, who died giving birth to her, was a beautiful and graceful woman with immense charm. Catherine's father often reminds her of all the things her mother was and that she is not.
Catherine inherited a great deal of money from her mother and will inherit twice as much more on the death of her father.
So, when a poor but handsome and well-bred man, Morris Townsend – a charmer who lets money slip through his fingers like water – begins to court Catherine, her father becomes suspicious that he must be after her money. Afterall, he reasons, what could she possibly offer to this young man other than her money?
Her father threatens to disinherit her when she refuses to give up her new beau. Will Catherine's father eventually convince her to give up Morris, or will the couple elope and live on the money left to Catherine by her mother? Or could there be another ending? Written by American playwrights Ruth and her husband Augustus Goetz. More information.
