STAGE PLAY SCREENING: The Audience (Sheppard Grande Cineplex $20/$22)

  • Jun 13, 2013 · 6:15 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Join us for a cinema screening of The Audience, a stage play starring British actress Helen Mirren who reprises her Academy Award-winning role as Queen Elizabeth II in this highly-anticipated West End production. The play is presented by National Theatre Live in Britain.

This meetup is being hosted by Lisa, who heads up one of Belinda's favourite groups, The Tea, Tea and More Tea Meetup.

THE SHOW

For 60 years Elizabeth II has met each of her 12 Prime Ministers in a weekly audience at Buckingham Palace - a meeting like no other in British public life - it is private. Both parties have an unspoken agreement never to repeat what is said. Not even to their spouses.

The Audience breaks this contract of silence - and imagines a series of pivotal meetings between the Downing Street incumbents and their Queen.

From Churchill to Cameron, each Prime Minister has used these private conversations as a sounding board and a confessional - sometimes intimate, sometimes explosive. From young mother to grandmother, these private audiences chart the arc of the second Elizabethan Age.

Politicians come and go through the revolving door of electoral politics, while the Queen remains constant, waiting to welcome her next Prime Minister.

The Audience reunites writer Peter Morgan and Academy Award-winning actress Helen Mirren following their collaboration on the critically-acclaimed movie sensation The Queen.

The Audience is directed by Academy Award-nominated director Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, The Hours) and presented in the West End by Matthew Byam Shaw for Playful Productions, Robert Fox and Andy Harries. More information.

It was launched in June 2009 with a broadcast of Phèdre with Helen Mirren, which was shown in over 200 cinemas and seen by a worldwide audience of more than 50,000 people. More information.

Well it was the last night for the Sheppard Grande (before they move over to their new Empress Walk site) and it was an eventful evening. The satellite transmission would not work so we were not able to see this broadcast. Very disappointing. The Sheppard Grande management were gracious and offered us show coupons. Such is life. Well, at least Karen and I had a few chuckles along the way. :)

It must have been the Sheppard Grand jinx that was against us because the Scotiabank theatre sallelite was working fine when I enquired. The July 3rd Encore performance are already sold out at both Scotiabank & Yonge/Eglinton theatres. Lisa, thumbs up or down for that black dress?

Omg!!! You're kidding, Karen! So based on what I said, that area has satellite voodoo happening. It obviously backfires as I received a grand total of 3 coupons.
I tag you as "host" at another area theatre. I can drive 3. However, I draw the line as Newmarket. LOL. Re: Dress---I would have to tell you in person why the dress is "thumbs down". Belinda would kill me if I post the "no-buy" reason. :)

Hi from London - I was lucky to see this play live with my group, and wow, it was fabulous. I wasn't expecting this play to be so funny, but it was hilarious. A great imagined play, which makes you think what really happens in these meetings and how different the queens life is. I'd recommend it thoroughly!
