SOLD OUT !!! Proud (Berkeley Street Theatre PWYC)

Join us for an evening performance of Proud, a political satire that is getting rave reviews at the Berkeley Street Theatre.

Our group will save at least 60 per cent on regular ticket prices by going on a pay-what-you-can Monday! If you prefer, you can buy an advance ticket for $17.50 for the performance. A regular adult ticket on weekends is $42.25.

UPDATE Oct. 1, 2012: This performance is now sold out.

THE PLAY

The play is set in the Prime Minister’s office in the Centre Block of parliament in Ottawa. It is just after the spring, 2011 election, but the reality of the play is different from ours: in the play, all the seats won by the NDP in Quebec have gone to the Conservatives. This means they have an overwhelming majority in parliament, and that there are a lot of rookie MPs in the Tory caucus. One such MP is Jisbella Lyth, from the fictional Quebec riding of Cormier-Lac Poule. She is a single mother who, up until getting elected, was the manager at a St Hubert franchise. The Prime Minister and his chief of staff, Cary Baines, begin to train Jisbella in the various methods and strategies that have made the Conservatives so successful. Written by Michael Healey. Directed by Miles Potter. Starring Michael Healey, Tom Barnett, Maev Beaty and Jeff Lillico.

According to the Toronto Star, Proud was originally supposed to run at the Tarragon Theatre, but was denied production due to libel concerns, Healey alleges, due to the play’s portrait of an unnamed prime minister, who bears a more than passing resemblance to Stephen Harper.

For more information on this play, see Canadian Stage and the Proud website. Also see articles.

ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC! Five-plus stars! Incredibly funny and well acted. I'll never think about Canadian politics the same way again. A big thank you to Janet for recommending this show.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
