If you like going to plays, musicals, comedy clubs and other arts events, but don't want to go alone ... you will love Thumbs Up!
We are a social group and we go to lots of shows in Toronto and beyond. All ages are welcome.
One of our mandates is affordable theatre. This means we actively seek ticket discounts when possible. We also go to the theatre on days when rush and pay-what-you-can tickets are offered.
We go to a wide range of shows, including:
- Professional theatre: Mirvish Productions (Royal Alexandra Theatre, Princess of Wales Theatre, etc.), Soulpepper Theatre, Canadian Stage, etc.
- Small theatre: Factory Theatre, Theatre Passe Muraille, Tarragon Theatre, etc.
- Community theatre: Bloor West Village, East Side Players, Scarborough Theatre, Curtain Call Players (North York), Mississauga Players, Oakville Players, Markham Little Theatre, etc.
- Student theatre: University of Toronto (Hart House, UC Follies, etc.), George Brown College Theatre School, etc.
- Stand-up, sketch and improv comedy: Second City, Absolute Comedy, Comedy Bar, Mad Dog Theatre, etc.
- Out-of-town theatre day trips: Stratford Festival, Shaw Festival (Niagara-on-the-Lake), Huron County Playhouse (Grand Bend), St. Jacobs, etc.
- French language theatre: Théâtre français de Toronto, Alliance français de Toronto, etc.
- Concerts: Toronto Symphony Orchestra, jazz music, etc.
- Opera: Canadian Opera Company, etc.
- Dance: National Ballet, etc.
- Filmed theatre productions: Special showings at Cineplex-Odeon Cinemas, etc.
- Other cultural events: Playwright readings, street festivals, art exhibits, garden shows, walking tours, etc.
We also arrange post-production talkback sessions with cast members and directors, attend opening night parties and go on backstage tours. Occasionally we throw in a non-theatrical event like going to the Canada Blooms garden show in Toronto.
There are lots of fun get togethers at affordable cafes and restaurants before and after shows.
It's free to join our group. Members are responsible for purchasing their own tickets directly from the theatre.
