RULES OF COMPOSITION. "To the rule of thirds and beyond". 4 Sessions. All Levels

  • Feb 10, 2013 · 1:30 PM

Special price of €119 to all members of the Tim Collins Photo Workshop group. (Normal Price €200)

4 Sessions - 1 per week. For ALL levels of photography.

You will be adding these and many more rules of composition to your tool bag:

  • Diagonal Lines
  • Leading Lines
  • Converging Lines
  • Selective cropping
  • Rule of Thirds
  • Movement techniques
  • Texture and details
  • Use of negative space
  • Perspective (viewpoint)
  • Depth of field and how to get the most blur
  • Filling the frame

So what is composition, and can I learn it?

Composition is the combination of all the different elements within an image coming together to make it what it is.

You may know the "rule of thirds", but there are many more rules of composition. Adding even 1 rule can hugely improve a photograph.

The good news is, you can learn many rules and start applying them immediately to get stronger, better, more pleasing photos. And that's what this course is about - learning to see things in the environment that can make your photo much more powerful.

Actually all of these photos I have included use several rules of composition. Some of these examples even use 4 or 5!

You will discover how to take many different images of the same subject using different rules of composition. This gives you many different options every time you want to shoot something.

"What about if I use several rules of composition in 1 photo?”

Well there’s a much better chance that it will be a strong image.

Day sessions:

We delve into the rules of composition and see how several rules can be brought together to make powerful images.

NDSM – Amsterdam’s disused shipyard and 1 of my favourite places for photography because there’s loads of examples of rules of composition.

Session 1 - Sunday 10th Feb 13.30 - 16.30. We visit multiple locations in Amsterdam working the areas for different aspects of composition. Meet in Hilton Sky lounge 11th Floor.

Session 2 - Sunday 17th Feb 13.30 - 16.30. Quick Fire Round - NDSM shipyard, Amsterdam (see above for description).

Session 3 - Tuesday 26th Feb 19.00 - 21.30. Night Photography Session In Amsterdam. All levels of experience in night photography will be suited to this. We will capture the light trails and twinkles of Amsterdam by night. 1 of my favourite types of photography!

Session 4 - Tuesday 19.00 - 21.30pm. We explore the different rules of composition.

We always go for drinks after every meetup, which is optional of course but normally very popular.

This is what previous workshoppers have said about it all:

We will explore the best camera settings to achieve different results for different composition rules.

If you look at this image below there are many rules of composition coming together to make it appear lots stronger!

Can you see the use of: Leading lines, Depth of field, Rule of thirds, Texture (in the road), and Perspective (it was taken about 5 cms off the ground).

Quick fire team round:

Everyone in the group will partner up, then I will call out a new compositional rule every 15 minutes. You will then go off in 2’s to capture examples of that compositional rule. After each 15 minutes we will all compare results together, then head off in pairs again to capture the next rule.

This exercise will train your eyes to see the many compositional elements that can be added in all environments. I will be bouncing round all the different groups offering suggestions, pointing out new options, and helping you look for combinations.

And there is a newsletter you can subscribe to to ensure you get the 1st choice on special offers and new workshops before they sell out.

As always it's a small group, 6-8 people. We all get know each other and I have plenty of 1 on 1 time with you so you get better faster.

You will be invited into the closed Facebook group where we share tips, give each other friendly feedback, organise meetups/socials and post our photos.

At the end each workshop I give everyone photo challenges to complete for the next session.

Its a very social experience and we always end the session with a drink or 2!

Hope to see you soon.

Hey everyone, we'll meet in the DoubleTree Hilton Hotel on the 11th floor in the Skylounge bar at 13.30 on Sunday. If you can't immediately see us we might be around the right, corner on the far side of the bar because its a great view from there :) The hotel is directly to the right of Amsterdam Centraal (as you're facing it).
