Backpacking Roan Mountain - Landscapes & Timelapse Photography

This is definitely one of the top places you have to see and photograph. The largest concentration of blooming Rhododendrons in the world will be on display in the 2nd week of June. I am inviting anyone who would like to join me for this excursion to Roan Mountain. I will be starting from Carver's Gap and hiking 1 mile to Jane Bald where I will setup camp. This is an easy hike but to get sunrise means you have to bring your tent, food, and water besides your camera gear. I will also be working on some timelapse photography because this location offers some amazing scenes when there are clouds rolling thru the valley. Weather and temperature is very unpredictable at this location, you can have clear sunrise and the next moment be covered in fog. This is not a workshop but I will be available to help with any questions. I assume if you RSVP that you would have all the necessary equipment. The drive from Northern Virginia is about 8 hours and I'll be leaving Friday morning and returning after sunrise on Monday. This is a spectacular location for photographers; it is relatively unknown so if you are up to it, you won't be disappointed!

I joined this meetup group when after I met up with them on the mountain. They were having fun and had the 'perfect spot' as I can attest to. Bernard is a lot of fun.

Thank you for you sharing your photos! You capture some gorgeous scenes that only backpackers can only capture! Not sure if you saw my final timelapse video, but you can catch it here. Welcome to Timescapes! And hope to catch up again one day!!

Rick- Your description of "a mouse carrying a refrigerator" is so vivid that I could picture myself with an oversized backpack:) .
Now I know why most all hikers gave me a right of way on the trail and some parents used me to encourage their kids to continue their walk.
Thanks for the suggestion, I will look for a right size backpack next time around.

This MEETUP was everything Buddy said, and much more! A trip of a lifetime. Everything was first class, from start to finish. If you love backpacking, you missed it, period! Nothing like getting out of your sleeping bag and chasing a sunrise (literally). The whole experience was magical. It had been 15 years since I last backpacked and this was the best backpacking experience I have ever had (minus one time with my wife (smile)). One can only hope that Buddy will have another backpacking MEETUP. Angelina was a trooper; she looked like a mouse carrying a refrigerator (we need to find you a better pack). I can't wait for the next MEETUP. Again Buddy, extremely well organized, researched and most of all, WELL DONE! I can't thank you enough for all you have taught me so far. Hope to see you soon... very soon!

I missed this. I have been very busy lately and hence unable to make it to the last couple of trips. But I am available for the next trips. I wish Bernard could have scheduled some trips in July-August too. I have loads of time during this period and would have loved to join Bernard on any excursion.

Hi Niloy, glad to see your rsvp for Canaan! I am planning for some trips in July-August but just haven't made concrete plans yet with family vacation time coming up. Thanks!

I had a wonderful time. Nothing is better than waking up amidst beautiful scenery. Thanks Bernard for leading the awesome trip. Thanks Rick for boiling water for us the whole trip and thanks both for all the waits :)

Awesome time with Angelina & Rick! First time locations are always hard to shoot but we managed to find our way around for some great images. Like always, we can't control Mother Nature but she presented us with some spectacular views! There is a learning curve with backpacking and photography, but in my opinion, this is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and to capture extraordinary scenes that otherwise would be missed. I look forward to coming back to Roan again and with a little more logistic experience, it should be one heck of a trip! Thank you Angelina & Rick for smiling the whole time, even when face with those grueling uphill hikes!

Sorry to have missed it!! Looks like you had some amazing views. Loved all the photos! I, for one, definitely plan to be back sometime when the rhododendrons are blooming! What an incredible place!!

Hi Bernard- I'm trying to figure out whether I'll be able to get to this - I'd love to! Are the rhododendrons still looking good for that weekend? When you mention camping, are you camping at the place where you'll be able to catch the sunrise in the morning? My husband and I may extend our trip on one end or the other (I've always wanted to see this part of the country - especially all the amazing waterfalls), so I'm trying to figure out logistics.
Do you know if they allow dogs where you camp? If we bring ours, my husband will take him on a hike or something so he doesn't disturb the photographers. :)
    Thanks!

Hi Bernard- We're planning to go (as of now), so let me know any details of when to arrive, where to meet, what you're doing about food, etc. :) Did you find out about the blooms? Can't wait to see that part of NC!

Theresa, I called them this morning and they couldn't give me an exact time but they said normally the blooms should be peaking starting around mid-June. They said don't be surprise to see lots of people because there is a bloom festival that weekend but we should miss a lot of them since we're on the AT trail. Angelina is meeting me at my house on Friday and then were driving to Woodbridge to pick up Rick. I haven't contacted Hari yet but it would be good if we can drive and follow cars together. I rather not have to wait at a certain point because anything can happen that could cause delay for all of us. I haven't nailed down what i'm bringing for food yet, but you can only bring what you can carry. You should be okay with your husband carrying the load. :)

I received my May print of Backpacker magazine today and on page 14 they have a two page image of Roan Mountain taken by Dave Allen. Dave specializes in North Carolina scenery and does beautiful work, I don't know him personally but I do have Flickr contacts who are his friends. Anyway, they have his image taken from Jane Bald looking back towards Roan Mountain and though it's a nice image, it's definitely not one of best I have seen from this place. I'm looking forward to this trip in June!

Wish I could join. My family leaves for a trip back home on the 16th. :( A weekend after and I would have definitely joined. I look forward to see photographs from your trip.

This sounds like a great opportunity for amazing photos and wonderful memories. I will be dragging my wife, Teresa, with me. She is an avid photographer as well.
