Photographing America Crown Jewels - Acadia

Okay everyone, this is going to be a spectacular 5-day workshop, photographing one of America's crown jewels - Acadia National Park in June, 2014. We will be shooting sunrises and sunsets all around this beautiful island, from rugged rocky high cliffs to rocky/sandy beaches. We will also find beautiful wild Lupines that grows as tall as your waist. This is one of easiest park to access for anyone at any fitness level.

The only down side - we have to meet at 4 am for 5 am sunrises and stay up late for 10 pm sunsets. However, our schedule will be set where you have plenty of rest to bring your energy back to your camera!

The longest days of the year is in June and first light hits Acadia before any place in the continental U.S. You will find the ocean water glimmering blue to aqua and be totally mesmerized by the beauty of Acadia.

Included will be a 3 day class on post processing your images from the day shoot. I will be using Photoshop to teach you how to blend multiple exposures to advance techniques using curves, levels and luminosity masking to make your images stand out. However, we can only post process beautiful images if they were beautifully taken. So I will teach you how to frame a picture and how to perfectly execute the technical details of your camera to capture your vision.

We will be staying at the Atlantic Oceanside Hotel & Conference Center in Bar Harbor, Maine. I was able to get discounted room rate of $116/night. I suggest finding a roommate to share the cost of the room. The cost of the workshop will be $300/person. This is a fabulous price for a 5-day workshop, which includes 12 hours of Photoshop classroom training. So plan now and start saving for this epic trip! Meeting time will be updated once members have finalized their attendance.

What to bring:

This is one trip that you can afford to bring more of your gear and accessories but the items listed below are the recommended minimum.

SLR camera
wide angle lens
zoom lens
sturdy tripod
remote trigger release
polarizer filter
lens cloth
headlamp

Don't forget to bring your excitement to learn more, see new places and meet like minded people!

Recommended wear:

heavy jacket
plenty of warm layered clothing (will be very cold in the morning)
thermal clothing
hat and gloves
sturdy hiking boots

Lodging:

Lodging is not covered with the workshop cost. Mention Reference No. 289381 when booking your lodging to receive a discounted rate of $116/night. You are more than welcome to communicate with other attending members about sharing rooms and splitting the cost. Be sure to make your reservations at the Atlantic Oceanside Hotel & Conference Center once you know for sure you are going. Call to reserve at [masked].

Price:

$300 per person. Payment is not required for RSVP but payment will be require before the workshop starts. You can also make arrangements with me if you like to pay in person.

WOW! What a trip to Mt. Desert Island! It has been nearly two weeks and I'm just now beginning to get my sleep bio-rhythms back in tune. It would be easy to praise Bernard for his guidance in taking our photography skills to new levels, but he provides so much more than that. Even though there were 12 of us, Bernard managed to give everyone ample one on one attention. His energy and passion are contagious and our group eagerly responded. An extremely positive photographic, and life experience. Thank you so much Bernard! PS And everyone else too!

Bernard planned an amazing opportunity in a beautiful place. He provided settings that were conducive to obtaining wonderful photos and classroom instruction that taught us how to make our photos even better. He is a great instructor. The members of the group were all great people to be around and very generous in sharing information with those who are on the lower end of the ability scale. Thanks to all of you.

In a word, this meetup was fantastic! Acadia National Park is a great place to explore and offers abundant opportunities to make outstanding landscape images. Our leader Bernard Chen is very talented and a gifted teacher with boundless energy. I came back from this meetup with a satisfied feeling of being physically tired from the early sunrises and late sunsets yet spiritually energized by the experience and the camraderie of a terrific group of folks.

Fabulous meetup! Beautiful environment, awesome people. -!: unparalleled photo ops. Bernard's expertise and readiness to provide individual attention is a great bonus, and the fact that people in the group help each other, too, goes to show that Timescapes brings FABULOUS opportunities! I am excited for the next opportunity to see and shoot with these folks! (Oh! And I love my very first Photoshop project, too!)

I loved this meetup. Bernard is an extremely talented photographer who is willing to share his idea's and who will go to lengths to teach you concepts. He was thoughtful of details and logistics for all ages and people with various skill sets. The group of people who joined the group were also very warm, friendly and helpful. Overall I am extremely happy with how Buddy (Bernard) organized and planned the trip. Apart from the skills I gained, I enjoyed the trip, it was a lot of fun! I will definitely be interested in joining for another trip and would recommend it to any of my friends!

I would just like to say I truly enjoyed working with everyone of you this past week! This was such a fun group to be around and I appreciate you all bringing all you got when your body was telling you otherwise. I never heard one complaint and that is a great tribute to each one of you! I saw great improvements in your processing skills on the third day of class and I'm really looking forward to seeing all of your images. We worked hard to get our images but I truly hope you came away from this trip with new found knowledge and inspiration to capture more beautiful images! I wish everyone a safe trip home, and I hope to see everyone again soon!

I'm wondering if anyone is coming back to the area on Saturday with room in their car for an additional person and her gear, hypothetically speaking?

Hello everyone, I am curious to know if any one will be flying into Bangor airport & who might be interested in car pooling.

    June 5, 2014

  • Ann O.

Hi Megan, Just shot you back an e-mail.

    May 28, 2014

  • Ann O.

I'm trying to decide flying/driving. If I wind up driving, I would like to carpool if that works for anyone else driving. If flying - what airports are people coming into? The Bar Harbor airport flights are quite expenseive; the flights into Bangor ME are much more reasonable, but it's an hour to drive to Bar Harbor so I was wondering about coordinating/sharing a rental car. Hey Ann - give me a call or drop me a line about getting together to discuss travel plans. Thought I had your # but I can't find it. I e-mailed you on 5/22, maybe it went to your spam folder? Thanks.

Could you recommend a good landscape lens? I have a Nikon, but don't have to stick with the Nikon brand. I don't currently have a wide angle lens and would like to purchase one before the trip

    Thanks

I SO hate to do this, but I'm going to have to take my name off the list for this amazing trip. Unfortunately, I didn't really think it through, and not having a laptop, I wouldn't be able to participate in the photoshop portion of the week except to observe. And, if you're anything like me, I find I don't learn nearly as much by watching, rather than doing.
I'm really bummed - I was so looking forward to this incredible location, and the couple of times that I was able to make one of Bernard's meet-ups, I learned more than at any other meet-up I've been to. (and they are among my best photos, still)
I hope everyone has a great time and learns a lot, and I look forward to seeing your photos! I hope to make it up to that area at some point, so if you come away with any tips, let me know!
So here you go - next person on the waiting list, this spot's for you! :)

    March 19, 2014

    • Bernard C.

Sorry to hear you cannot make it Theresa. Hopefully you can make the next one.

      March 25, 2014

Bernard, I signed up for myself +1 for the Acadia Meetup, and am on the waitlist. I wanted to clarify that I would be the only one taking the workshop. The other person would only be sharing the hotel room.

    February 24, 2014

  • Rajiv A.

Hello Bernard, I am new to this group. Your pictures are awesome! I think I would learn quite a bit from you skills with the camera and the Photoshop tool. Merging, layering are some areas I really want to learn. I am on the wait list, do you think its wise to get the hotel reservations done now itself?

    February 11, 2014

    • Bernard C.

Hi Rajiv, thank you for your kind comments and welcome to the group. I wouldn't make any reservations now but I wouldn't worry about not getting a room if your name makes it to the attending list. I blocked a number of rooms so you should be okay.

      February 11, 2014

    • Rajiv A.

      Awesome. Thanks Bernard.

      February 11, 2014

  • Theresa R.

Yay - I see I moved up! (sorry, FK Ken) I have a question though. I see that photoshop is part of the workshop. Will we need to have a laptop with photoshop on it? I don't have photoshop (yet - hope to soon), and I only have an iMac..... Just wondering. Thanks!

    February 11, 2014

  • Frankie K.

Team, hate that my plans and budget have changed so I will release my slot for someone to move up. I hope to maybe go there at later date prior to moving away.

Hi Bernard- Just in case I'm able to get off the waiting list, my husband wanted to go ahead and make a reservation at the Inn to make sure we'd get one. Is there a specific group name to ask for to get the price you listed? Or, should I use your name? He tried online and couldn't get anything near that price...... Thanks!

    Hi Theresa
The reference Bernard gave us when making lodging reservations is[masked]

    February 10, 2014

  • Bernard C.

Sorry everyone for the confusion. The workshop will start on Sunday afternoon around 3:30-4:00PM. We will meet in the hotel's lobby area and go out for our first sunset. This will give everyone who is driving enough time to join us safely. We will end the workshop on Thursday after sunrise, however, if you are not in a hurry to get home there are plenty of scenery to capture in this area or other areas on the way home.

    February 8, 2014

  • Bernard C.

I just booked my flight through Cheaptickets.com for $391. I will be leaving Washington on Friday at 7:30 AM and arriving in Bar Harbor at 11:05 AM. Depart Bar Harbor on Thursday at 11:35 AM and arriving back in DC at 3:34 pm. I have not looked at other options so those of you who are flying can check your specific dates.

    February 7, 2014

    • Bernard C.

I reserved an SUV that can hold 8 people. If you are flying and would like to car pool, let me know when you are arriving.

Atr the workshop dates still 7:00 am Sunday morning (22 June) thru 6:45 pm Thursday evening (26 June)?

    February 7, 2014

  • Theresa R.

Wow - just saw I moved up on the waiting list...... Not that I want anyone to miss out, but I'm kind of hoping a space opens up :)

    February 3, 2014

  • Bernard C.

Hi Everyone, I apologies but I have to be back by Friday after the workshop ends to attend my kids summer camp. This means I have to fly and will not have time to see the puffins or catch some other scenery on the way home. However, let me know if you are flying and I can rent a large enough vehicle so everyone doesn't need to rent. If you like to have your own vehicle, that is fine too. Just let me know who would like to carpool. Thanks!

When are you flying up and returning? I was planning to fly up on Friday morning and return the following Friday evening, allowing one more sunrise. I would be interested in carpooling if schedules align.

Hello Guys - New to the group. I live in Richmond and this trip sounds great. I do have a question. How does everyone plan to actually get to Maine. Drive/Fly?

    January 7, 2014

    • Angelina

I would like to carpool with someone. Willing to share the room if any lady is interested.

      January 30, 2014

I plan to fly to Portland and drive a rental car from there. I also have a room reserved and available to share to reduce cost. Let me know if interested.

      January 30, 2014

  • Bernard C.

I have this workshop ending on Thursday but plan to take a short hop over to capture some Puffins or even Nova Scotia. Or we can take our time back to capture some more fabulous lighthouses around Portland, ME.

    3 · May 31, 2013

    • Connie

Awesome! I love puffins and lighthouses too! I'm assuming the Oceanside reservation should only be through Thursday?

    • Ann O.

yes - checking out on Thursday.

If you are for sure coming, you can make your reservation now at the Atlantic Oceanside Hotel & Conference Center. Please reference this number to get the discount: 289381. I have 8 rooms on hold for our group so this is the time to nail down your spot. They upgraded our room so all the rooms should be very nice. Please let me know when your room has been confirmed.
