We’ll have a free picnic before the Topic-Talk Walks (TTW) walk from 5:00 to 6:00 pm on the Monet Deck facing the water garden pond.

In your RSVP comment section, let me know if you will be coming to the pre-walk picnic, or call me, Fran, at (303) 321-1064. Except for the 3 free DBG admission tickets mentioned at the end of this walk description, for additional tickets, TTW participants must either be a DBG member, or pay the regular DBG admission price.

To get to the Monet Deck, walk straight ahead from the Denver Botanic Gardens (DBG) entrance gate along Shady Lane to the large Water Garden pond in the back of the gardens, and turn left to the Monet Deck on the south side of this large pond. You'll notice we changed the date from a Tuesday to a Saturday!!

Our TTW walk will begin at 7:00 pm from the Monet Deck, with individual introductions on the Monet Deck between 7:00 to 7:10 pm., and then we'll begin our group walk (or do a walking group dance step) to the Japanese garden Tea House area and around the Japanese Garden pond out to the Montane Garden and into the Rock Alpine Garden and beyond.

Our inspirational Walk Guest is Tom Rapp. Tom is the Director of RSVP for Adams/E. Arapahoe at the Senior Hub. See http://www.... seniorhub.org. He helped start the MAGIC Garden in Northglenn. MAGIC is the acronym for Multi-Agency Gardening Intergenerational Collaboration. He also helps to coordinate the Adams County Community Gardens Cooperative, a network of 15 community gardens that nourishes the gardeners and provides food to county food banks. Tom is a retired middle school administrator.

Walk Host Fran Rew said, "I first saw Tom Rapp being interviewed by Cynthia Hessin on her 'Life Wise' PBS television program. When I heard about his MAGIC Garden blending the volunteer gardening efforts of senior citizens and middle school students, this sounded like a wonderful idea, and I wanted to hear more. Then I went to visit 2 of the many gardens. What a beautiful job they do together!” You can view the photos of the community gardens from Fran's visit at http://walkers.meetup....

This TTW walk is not sponsored by the DBG. However, the Walk Host and many TTW members are fond supporters of the DBG.

At the DBG ticket booth, TTW has 3 free DBG admission tickets for the first 3 TTW audience walkers who tell the ticket booth attendant that they are registered for the TTW picnic and walk. Our Walk Hosts and Walk Guests will also be getting free tickets. The ticket booth attendants will have an alphabetical list of registered TTW walkers for this walk. Everyone else must either be a DBG member or pay the regular DBG admission price. DBG members are encouraged to share their family memberships with family, friends and other TTW walkers for this walk.

    •  As Tom told us about the history of the beginnings of the many different community gardens that he directs, it was wonderful to hear him say, "We're not only growing food, we're growing relationships." Each garden had a different social structure. From church groups, to trailer court neighbors, to boy scouts and senior citizens, relationships grow. He's going to email a list of community garden locations for us to upload and connect with this walk's online documentation. He talked about how so many people are cutting corners, and not eating healthy food in order to pay for housing, medical, or commuting expenses. Richard talked about sprouting everything from beans to wheat to get maximum nutrition. Michael recommended that we include links to the many community support options on our web site. Sybil wants to invite her church to participate in a community garden. Before we parted, Tom said, "It's about being aware." I definitely felt more aware after our walk together.
    •  One of the most successful walk talk meetups I've been on.
    •  Enjoyed learning from Tom Rapp, all about community gardens and a connection to Food Banks. I learned that more than 20% of our population can suffer from insufficient "Food Security:" having not enough money to cover ALL of their basic survival needs, at times, especially during the winter.

We had fun. Hope the attendees did too. Thanks! Tom and Jean Rapp. I'll be sending you the notes and garden locations by separate e-mail.
