Classical Music Outside the Box (...and a glass of wine)

Music in the Barns Chamber Ensemble wraps its second season of boundary-pushing performances on Aug. 1, 2013 with a return to its home venue, the mainspace of Artscape Wychwood Barns. Putting an innovative spin on the traditional chamber concert by channeling the improvisatory art “happenings” of the 1970s, the performance offers a fresh and intimate experience as the players interact with audience members in various configurations. Special guests include The Spectrolite Ensemble with clarinetist Sean Rice (of the National Arts Centre Orchestra) and cellist Vernon Regehr.

Offering a sophisticated combination of repertoire that journeys from jazz to classical and minimalism to modernism, the program features several rarely-performed powerhouse pieces including Philip Glass’ String Quartet No. 5, Alan Shulman’s belle-époque inspired Rendezvous for clarinet and string quartet (premiered by Benny Goodman in 1946), Gra for solo clarinet by two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Elliott Carter and Paul Hindemith’s marvelous Clarinet Quintet, Op. 30.

Fresh from a four-performance run of Figaro’s Wedding with Against the Grain Theatre—hailed by the Toronto Star as “a treat from beginning to end,”—Music in the Barns Chamber Ensemble is gearing up for this next, up-close and action packed event. Known for bringing concert experiences into social and experiential spheres, Music in the Barns will once again take the 7,500 sq. ft. warehouse space to new artistic and imaginative heights. The Ensemble’s world-class performances feature multi-level staging and in-the-round seating, while guests are also encouraged to enjoy a glass of wine as they take in the spectacular sounds and surroundings. Helene,
I suggest meeting at World Class Bakers at:
    690 St Clair Ave W, Toronto, ON M6C 1B1
    (416)[masked]

World Class Bakers is at the T intersection of Christie and St. Clair (St. Clair West streetcar lets out there.) It has a really large sign too! :)

The Barns are approx. 1 block south on Christie on the east side of the street (again, can't miss it).
    Best,
    Carol

    Hi Ana,
This sounds like a misunderstanding by the store. I will give them a call. Tickets will be available at the door.
    Apologies,
    Carol

    Just to let everybody know:

Today at 1:20 PM I was at In-person ticket purchase: Soundscapes, 572 College St., Toronto with the intention of purchasing my ticket as an artist I am, but for my unpleasant surprise, Jay ( the person in charge at the store) told me the tickets are $30 each since I am not a student.
When I explained him what it is written above and below he told me he was said to ask for $30 to any one but students. I decided not to buy my ticket even when I was there with that only purpose.

Can anyone tell me why is this? Something is wrong in here, and it is not myself. This is not good !!!

Carol, thanks for your email. Can you suggest a meeting spot inside/outside the venue so that those of us who would like to enjoy with the company of others from this group can do so - at 7pm say? Thanks! Helene

    Hello everyone,
Carol here. I am the artistic director and a violist for the concert on Thursday. I am very excited to see the great response here.
As I am a bit new on meetup, please let me know what you might need to facilitate your meeting spot/host. The doors open at 7pm and seating is first come first serve.
We (the musicians and I) look forward to seeing you all there!
    Sincerely,
    Carol

Hi Everyone, this is just an FYI, unless someone is volunteering to host or guide this event... this event is an independent event. I am not hosting this event personally. If someone would like to guide the group through the event let me know and I will make you an event host. If no-one volunteers then everyone can attend the event either by themselves or with their own friends.
