Do you love the ethereal beauty of Orchids like I do? The strange stark stalks with large alien like blooms can make for such fascinating photographs.

Join me at the Southern Ontario Orchid Society's Annual show for a chance to photograph their best in show!

The show will feature over 30,000 orchids in over 6000 square feet of space and will take place on Saturday and Sunday, during the regular hours of the show, you cannot use a tripod to take photographs, only handheld images are permitted. However the society makes a special allowance on Sunday morning for 2 hours before the show starts, where the space will be open to photographers only and our tripods will be allowed. This is a great opportunity to take some stunning photographs of these beautiful orchid displays.

The only cost for this meetup is the admission cost for the show which is 12 dollars which you will pay directly at the door. (not to me) They accept cash only. However they have a coupon available on their website, that gives you two dollars off. You can grab that here:

http://www.soos.ca/Show/coupon.htm

After 11am you are welcome to stay and take handheld photos and enjoy the exhibition. We can also head for a quick coffee after we are done shooting. I am really excited about this show, and hoping you can all join me, in the meantime, here are some fabulous photos of orchids to give you inspiration:

Great, a bit crowded but managed to make it productive.

Too crowded. The show organizers could have instead of only one, multiple sessions with a limit of photographers per session. being an Association they could charge a bit more which would be beneficial for their budget

They got cranky for carefully placing a black cardboard behind an orchid. Their reason; "it is in the regulations"which I doubt there is any specific rule stating that. We are all responsible individuals who would act carefully respecting the plants.

Also I do not blame them for not allowing us to alter the displays at all. I disagree about trusting the public to be responsible, considering the crowd, I think had we been able allowed to do as you suggest, there would have most definitely been an accident with the flowers. I for one took great care to keep my distance from the displays just for the number of times I was bumped or pushed. Orchids are slow and difficult flowers to bloom, and I would not want someone's hard work and patience be destroyed by an inconsiderate photographer trying to get a shot. I am sorry you did not enjoy yourself, but I hope you did get some good photos despite the less than ideal circumstances.

Holding a card in the air is in no way an alteration of the display...

Everything was good for me because I returned after recharging my battery and was lucky to learn a lot about orchids (Their volunteers were open and helpful) and may be I should not nag about the after work coffee that I missed because it was formally cancelled before.

I wish I had known you were meeting up for lunch I left and went home........

    February 17, 2013

    • Lilly L.

I wish we had been introduced. The coffee was just a last minute thing that we organized on the fly. I knew it was going to be a chaotic busy shoot and thus chose not to organize something officially, I hope to meet you at a future shoot however.

To me this was very crowded I would have thought they would have spaced it out a bit more. beautiful facility they could have used another room or two. Other than that I enjoyed the show and got one or two shots.

  • Rodeo68

I think I got a few good shots. I chalk this one up for experience in crowded spaces.

do you need to bring flash or just tripod?

    February 12, 2013

    • Lilly L.

It can't hurt to have it in the arsenal, but I would hope that the ambient light will be sufficient. I do not plan on using flash.

I am just wondering how can one get these kind of perfect images with black backgrounds behind. Please shed some light. I am a starter and would like to learn how to take these level of photographs. Also, can this kind of processing the photographs be done in lightroom?

One more question: How can you hold black paper, if one brings it? Overall, do you think there is any point in bringing it, or a tripod is good enough for a first timer...

To clarify...you do not pay me anything. The 10 dollar cost you are paying goes directly to the admission to get in to the show, provided you use the coupon provided. Otherwise you will have to pay 12 at the door. Cash only. You are paying nothing to me. I do not charge for events unless I have to.
