Hi Helen. The Canon EF 100-400mm L lens is a great lens. It is my favourite. It makes amazing close ups & has perfect blur backgrounds. However, it does have some drawbacks to consider. It is very heavy. It requires a tripod most of the time for decent shots. It has a "push-pull" type of focal distance selection, so it is not the usual twist-to-zoom lens. There are better lenses out there, like the EF 70-200mm f 2.8 II IS L new one, but at a higher cost. Happy shooting. Nella
