A Critical Skill
Do you know how to start a fire when it counts? If you ever need to get warm, sterilize water or cook food you'll need to get a fire going and it's not as easy as it looks in those SAS guidebooks (I know, I've tried it). This event will give you the opportunity to master a variety of techniques with our resident wilderness expert Joe McCumber. If time permits we may also cover how to build a shelter.

The event will be held in the woodland area near Kipling Ave. and Steeles Ave. We will meet as a group at Kipling TTC station (round meeting/pickup area) at 1:00pm and travel up together. If you have a car and will be attending please let me know.

What to Bring:
• Appropriate outdoor clothing for the weather
• Food/snacks and a beverage
• Fire starting implements (if you have them)
• A good outdoor knife (if you have one - if you don't have one it's a good thing to invest in. Check the message board for info about knives)

About our Guide
Since before he could walk, Joe has spent most of his life hunting, fishing, long distance hiking and handling horses. He has completed the army ranger s.e.r.e course (survival evasion resistance and escape) and is a long distance target shooter and a gunsmith by trade.

Joe comes highly recommended by a number of people in our group who have had the opportunity to learn Wilderness survival skills from him.

** If it's going to rain that day I will keep to posted as to our plan B. If it's just a sprinkle the event will go ahead however if it's pouring we may need to reschedule.

Great experience - just what I had hoped for. The group members were very generous in sharing their knowledge.

Hi Although it's illegal, over the summer I've camped out on Toronto Islands a few times. It's a good private place close to downtown to light a fire and what not. I would like to attempt a camp-out there during the winter, and try to make some ground heating with stones???

Bitter sweet - I'm sorry that it has been postponed BUT I'm super happy that I'll be here for the next one (hopefully)!

For all of you who are going to miss this event never fear, we will be having ongoing Fire events in the future. I'd like to do a winter event in a few months. Please note that you do not have to have a knife so don't rush out and buy one it's just a nice thing to have.

    •  Despite the fact that our wilderness expert wasn't there we still had a great learning experience. I mastered the magnesium and steel technique which I'm quite proud of. Special thanks to Vitaly, our stand-in fire expert. You guys are a great crew, thanks!
