This event is for people who are intrested in growing their own food.

Whether you have a rooftop garden, window boxes on your balcony, a dedicated plot in your backyard or have dreams of creating your own vegetable garden, this event is for you!

On October 9th we have the great fortune of having Roberta Stimac, founder of the Withrow Park Organic Farmer's Market and Seeds of Diversity Board Member to speak with us about the many benefits of growing our own food.

Roberta is a unique individual who is extremely educated (with a Master's Degree from York University) on this topic and who brings with her an unrivaled passion for gardening and food cultivation. She is very much an advocate for the respect of food and more than willing to share her knowledge with our group.

Over ales and appetizers (or dinner if you wish), Roberta plans to craft a talk for our members that will involve:

* A quick overview of the food system
* Why growing one's own food is an act of empowerment
* A brief look into environmental activism
* What you need to know about harvesting seeds
* Who to go to for the best seeds

On hand will be books for you to leaf through, pictures to help illustrate various points and a hand-out for each of us to take-away.

Bring your questions, appetites and an eagerness to learn. We'll kick off the night with a formal talk by Roberta and at the half way point we'll switch into a free flowing discussion with an opportunity to ask questions.

* Stay awhile after the event to mix, mingle and meet your fellow Survivalists.

Sorry I couldn't make it. Me and my cold germs stayed home. Can the handouts given out be scanned and attached to our "files" database?

Hi everyone, I'm not sure if it was clear in the description about the night. the cost of $5 will go toward our speaker and people are free to order a beverage, snack or dinner. I believe the folks at Sarah's need us to at least buy a drink of some sort. Hope this helps! Michelle

    •  This was a great first "official" meetup. When it comes to growing food there is so much to cover that we're going to need to do a series of these just to get the info under our nails, so to speak. The speaker was knowledgeable and approachable, the handouts were great and everyone enjoyed lively conversation afterward over drinks. It seems most of the group members are on the same page and everyone connected really well. I think we may have snagged a few new members too.
    •  There was a lot of information to cover on this topic, and so I liked the fact that most aspects were talked about. (Environmental, Political and Social etc. ) It is important to keep topics in the grand scheme of things as well as directly correlated to our local and present experiences. This was a well organized meeting with informative handouts to take home. Thanks for all your work.
    •  I hope there is follow up on tonights discussion, perhaps pre-spring, spring and summer. We enjoyed tonight very much! Also, a great meeting place. Good food and great beer!!
    •  Great discussion and information. It was my first meetup, everyone was very thoughtful and the topics were brilliantly delivered. Beer was great!
