Healing Herbs & Other Home Remedies

  • Jul 24, 2013 · 6:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Herbal healing remedies in the form of teas, poultices, and infusions took their root in Europe, co-existed with oriental healing herbal remedies and merged with the rich herbal remedies of the Native Americans. Even at this era when herbs have been given away to the modern chemical-based medicine, in many developed countries, some 70% to 80% of the population still has used some form of alternative or complementary medicine, for its natural healing and remedial power, often without the same negative side effects.

Transition Toronto is pleased to bring you the “Healing Herbs and Other Home Remedies” workshop on July 24th, provided by herb expert Monika Meulman of Healingmuse, to teach you how to pick, prepare and apply the right herbal healing remedies at home and in your community. You will have a chance to learn how to make a simple salve, poultice, infusion, and herbal water.

WORKSHOP FEE: $10 - PAY AT THE DOOR

Note: you no longer have to register at Transition Toronto's page. They are watching this page, so you only have to RSVP here. Thanks!

Monika Muelman recommended a very unique and well researched book: Wildflowers of Riverdale, applicable to what is growing in the Greater Toronto Area. As a group, we are planning to put in a bulk order when the new version comes out before the Spring of 2014. Here is a sample of the current version: http://www.riverwoodconservancy.org/MGCfiles/MediaReleases/WildflowersOfRiverwood/WildflowersOfRiverwood-SamplePages.pdf If you are interested in placing an order at the bulk price, please reply to this link below: http://www.meetup.com/Toronto-Survivalists/messages/boards/thread/36703852/post/106252092/?hash=106252092#[masked]

Thanks for the links, Colleen. I'll have to include some of these walks with my edible plants education.

During looking up the book Monika recommended (Wildflowers of Riverwood), I found an excerpt .pdf: http://www.riverwoodconservancy.org/MGCfiles/MediaReleases/WildflowersOfRiverwood/WildflowersOfRiverwood-SamplePages.pdf. You can buy the book by calling[masked] or email [masked]. I l also found a list of upcoming Plant walk tours in Aug-Sept @ Riverwood: http://www.riverwoodconservancy.org/upcoming-events/events/summer-2013-discoveryriverwood-events-calendar.html. Enjoy!

That was a great event! Monika is very knowledgeable & she delivered a nice blend of slide presentation, demonstrations, hands on books, herbs, ginseng tasting, two salves, water infusion and time to answer our questions. I think everyone took some new knowledge home with them tonight. Thank you Monika & Xirong!

The presentation was well done but I was dissapointed there wasn't enough of the handout
info sheets for everyone to have.

I just emailed Xirong. I believe the exact information on those 3 pages was in the slide show and the slides are going to be emailed to all of us :) If this is not correct, I will let you know.

Finally, I do want to take this opportunity to send a HUGE THANK-YOU to this group for supporting the Transition Toronto community and being part of this important work. It means a LOT to us that you're signing up and sharing. Let's keep the momentum going!

Also, I've moved to Vancouver, so I will be handing over the responsibility to the most capable Xirong Jiang. Please feel free to contact her on our TTO website (www.transitiontoronto.ca) if you have any questions.

Thanks, everyone, for your interest. To whomever added the event on this group, please update your description to correct the July 14th date (just to minimize confusion :-))

Also, we had a number of no shows ( 12 no shows out of a total 21 registered) at our last event - Family Emergency Preparedness. So, please, please respect the organizers of this event and don't register unless you're sure you can come. We don't know which no shows signed up from this group, but we had to turn away a few people and the revenue barely covered our costs. Last minute urgent issues are understandable, but this number of no shows really took us by surprise. Thank you for understanding.

I am in charge of this one. I was not in charge of any other ones. I will makes sure to send out emails closer to the event to confirm the RSVPs. I understand 100% the disappointment of organizing an event and having people not show and others on the waiting list wishing they could have had an opportunity.

OK great. See you on the 24th.

Out of town on the 24th. Text says the 14th, but link also says 24.

    July 12, 2013

    • Colleen

Yes, there is a mistake in the text, this event is on the 24th not the 14th.
