Ride to Port Credit with High Park climb

Returning visitors report that this ride gets easier every time they do it. Especially the Ellis Park switchback! : )

Join us for our weekly evening workout ride through picturesque High Park and along the scenic Waterfront Trail.

This is a workout ride with some steep climbs and a good deal of distance, especially for a week night! Fantastic for keeping in shape and steadily increasing your cycling ability.

Make sure to dress for the cooler evening weather and have a light on your bike since it will be well after dusk when we return.

We'll start south of the Princess Gates, go along the watefront, do a lap of Climbing High Park before journeying on to Port Credit along the waterfront trail.

Important notes:

Starting Location: http://goo.gl/maps/M8DST

Average speed: We'll tailor the speed to the abilities of the participants, with a minimum average speed of 20km/h. I'd prefer to aim for 25km/h and last year we had some groups that did 30km/h, but the overarching goal is for everyone to enjoy participating in the ride.

Average meaning that we'll predominantly go above the given speed and sometimes below it; with stopping and starting we'll average at least 20km/h. If 20km/h is a top speed for you, then this ride may be too challenging for you. If riding only 20km/h is frustrating for you, then this ride may be too slow for you. Our aim will be for a 25km/h average.

Route: We'll ride along the Waterfront Trail as much as possible. The High Park section is very steep at times. While going along Lakeshore Rd through Mimico would be faster, the trail is more scenic.

The ride is about 57km round trip, including the High Park segment: http://goo.gl/qUsKl

Terrain: The High Park section is very steep at times. Some riders may need to dismount and walk to the crest of a couple of hills. The rest of the ride is extremely flat, since it follows the shore of the lake.

Road Surface: The ride to port credit is completely on paved roads, however in High Park there is a 500m section of hard-packed unpaved road. I readily navigate this on my skinnies, but I know some people prefer not to put their delicate road machines through such abuse.

Weather: The ride will proceed unless it is already raining steadily at start time. If there are intermittent showers that will not stop the ride. It is possible that the road surface will be still be wet in some parts of trails so please don't wear your newest all-white cycling outfit if you don't want it getting dirty.

I actually did NOT regret the hills. Maybe only during the top third of each hill.

every time you conquer a hill, you'll feel that much better. :)

I didn't regret the hills either, I was like that's it? Lol. But the last hill was pretty steep. 1 guy was walking his bike up the hill faster than me riding up the hill lol.

Lot's of fun, good pace. A couple people complained it was too fast pace but I thought we could go a little Fraser. I missed the highpark climb at the start, I heard it's tough but I'll try it next time!

    July 23, 2013

    • Denise I

If you do the High Park climbs before the run to Port Credit, you might find the pace is just fast enough.

      July 23, 2013

    • David B.

The highpark climb wasn't too bad. Didn't really tire me out. This Tuesday we seemed to have 2 groups, fast one and slower one. The fast one, the pace seemed just right for me :) Are you going Friday? I'd like to try it. Andy said it'll be similar to the Tuesday ride but 5km/he faster pace.

      July 24, 2013

  • Stefan A.

Just to clarify, I wouldn't suggest that the pace be slowed down - just that periodic stops be added to regroup and ensure that people are not left behind entirely. What is the point of travelling as a group otherwise?

That is a great idea, Joey. Thanks for offering. Can't make it this week, so have fun.

I don't know what is the best but for me I try to never lose sight of the person in front of me. The description does say minimum 20km/hr on average so if you go slower than that then maybe this ride is too fast for you.

Thoroughly enjoyed it - thank you. If anyone wondered what happened to the Brit on the Brompton - soon after starting the return I following a guy in a red shirt heading the wrong way! I discovered the error after 1km and Google maps helped me find my way back (I'm new here). I had nice ride back admiring lake views but even this slower return doesn't account for why time goes so fast in the group. Time seemed to pass about 5 times faster on the outward section. I returned to the start at 9.40pm feeling a bit like Forest Gump! I didn't want to stop! So after another Timmies I cycled on to North York, about 70km in total, just as my knees were starting to weaken - perfect timing. Thanks for a great evening.

I did enjoy the ride and managed to stay with the group all the way to Port Credit; however on the way back I lost you all close to the Humber; wasn't sure whether you'd turned towards Mimico or gone straight . Anyways I am satisfied with my performance in the first such ride, being just a couple of weeks shy of my 70th birthday. More practice and I should be ok. And it was nice to have met everyone. I kept looking for the only other senior Exe "Cute"; not sure what happened.

hey everyone! Even though I lost the group I really enjoyed the ride, and did regret the hills :) I kept going even though I had no clue where I was.. And eventually turned around at browns line and headed back when I found Stefan. Thanks for the guiding light back Stefan, much better than riding back alone.
All in all, I enjoyed the ride!

Good ride tonight. Felt quicker than last time. Maybe bc I know the route and what to expect. Props to those riding the hills for their first time. More training and you'll be a pro at them.

Hey guys, nice to have met everyone! Unfortunately (or fortunately ) I was late and missed the hill climb! Next Tues I'll be in time:) And I hope everyone got home safely, seems we lost a few. And thanks Andy for organizing and leading!

It was nice meeting everyone. Was a little disappointed to get separated from the group, and I feel particularly bad for Leah as she fell behind way back at the Humber. I thought we did really well keeping the group together at High Park, but that kinda fell apart after we headed West. Maybe we could've stopped and regrouped a little more regularly? Just a thought. Anyway, it was fun. Cheers, everybody!

Thank you, Leah, for a nice ride back to your car. I actually made it back to the Beaches without dying, and I was even able to ride up the last hill without stopping. Woohoo! That pizza must have been a miraculous manna!

We had a good fast group that stuck together nicely. I wish more rides were like this with the Meetup group.

Great ride. Much fun. As long as I don't have to do the MGT from Strachen to Ellis, I'm a happy camper. Very good group tonight.

It was exciting to go with such a fast group of cyclists. I'm going to need more training.

Looks like my 1st attendance will be a more challenging one! You'd be surprised the speed I can maintain when you see my bike but to be honest it's designed for cities and I don't like hills. Any prob and I can take it home on the bus ;)

I want to do this ride, but I just don't know if I'll be able to get through it after my long day.

We actually finish the hill climbs and exit the park at Colborne Lodge Dr. Meeting us there will probably be better.

This ride looks great, but sadly I'm not able to make it on Tuesdays - any chance of it (or a similar ride) ever taking place on a Friday or Saturday?

    July 4, 2013

    • Andy Z.

Yeah, for sure. There's one scheduled for July 26 already and I'll be peppering them in as I can.
