Becel Ride for Heart!
What a great way to enjoy a bike ride along the traffic-free
DVP and Gardiner Expressway while giving back to a worthwhile
cause. For 23 years, the Heart and Stroke Foundation has been hosting
this unique event to raise crucial funds and save lives.
Presenting 13,000 riders with a unique challenge in an
incredible location. The Becel Heart&Stroke Ride for Heart is
the only charity event that lets participants ride traffic-free
along Toronto's main arteries...Together Riding to Save Lives.
The event includes rest stations/beverages along the route, a
heart healthy post-ride snack, route marshalls for safety, a
post-ride celebration and other perks.
I'll be riding along the 50km route (general start) for those
who want to ride with me. We can "meet-up" beforehand or after
the ride for the post event party. There are 50 km and a 25 km
bicycling routes to choose from. Les the Handyman will be doing the 25 K ride with his disco playing Recumbent bicycle (have you seen that thing???) , or if you'd rather blade than
bike, there are 8, 16 and 24 km routes. Many drop-out points
along the way. Don't let the length of the route fool you. For
me, my goal is the 50km but my focus is fun. If I've had enough
before the 50km mark, I'll gladly cut my ride short and enjoy
the day. Hope you feel the same.
In order to participate, the following are mandatory: •A Becel Ride for Heart registration fee (the group rate with 5
or more participants is $45 per person paid before June 1st or
$65 per person payable on event day. See below for
registration/payment details. We'll be biking with the group
I've formed called "Uptown/Downtown Friends".
•Helmets must be worn or you will be turned away.
Registration / Payment Details:
Procedure to sign up with Uptown/Downtown Friends:
1) Click on the link: Becel Ride for Heart.
2) Click on "REGISTER NOW" Button, "REGISTER NOW AND SAVE".
Select "I AGREE" under WAIVER/AGREEMENT.
3) Select "JOIN A GROUP". Select our Group Name
("Uptown/Downtown Friends") from the drop down menu.
4) Follow the instructions to fill out the online form.
Note that the Registration Fee covers the costs of running the
event. It's the fundraising, if possible on your part, that
actually goes towards the Heart and Stroke Foundation. I have
set a fundraising goal of $100 for our group. It's easy to do.
Once you've registered, follow the onscreen instructions in
regards to fundraising.
Please indicate in your RSVP on our meetup site whether you
plan on biking with me so that we can plan to "meet-up".
Likewise, if you choose an alternate route, indicate that on
your RSVP. In this way, Les the Handyman will be on that route playing disco music on his Urban Assault Vehicle, you may be able to arrange meeting up with him at the same time.
with fellow members for your chosen route.
I've been meaning to do this for awhile and I and Les the Handyman look forward to
riding along the DVP with all of you. Hope to see you there!
Check back for updates and let me know if you have any problems
signing up with our group on the Becel website.
Les the Handyman will have his truck there so if any minor adjustment must be made before we go we can and at the end of the ride if some of you are too tired to ride home, I can take 6 extra bikes in my trailer and can ta take 4 people and 6 bike home within the Toronto Area.
