Hot Chocolate Ride

Winter Blues got you down, time to ride them away with bikes and chocolate - two of my favourite things.

We'll start at Wellesley and Bay heading to SOMA at King and Spadina -- anyone who wants to meet the group at our first destination is more than welcome to start there, we should be there sometime between 1 and 1:15.

After sampling the awesomeness of Soma will be heading east to Bobette & Belle on Queen East just west of Jones Avenue.

This is open to anyone, casual speeds and I'll try to keep the route to roads with bike lanes and plowed side streets.

If the weather is not favourable I will postpone to the following Sunday -- updating the page the morning of the ride - fingers crossed for sunshine and no wind -- I don't want to do the ride in crappy weather.

Dress warm and see you there

Route:

Wellesley heading west through UofT campus to Beverly

South on Beverly Street to Stephanie Street

East on Stephanie to John Street

South on John to Richmond Street

West on Richmond to Brant Street

South on Brant to King

Arrive at SOMA

North on Brant to Adelaide Street

East on Adelaide to Sherbourne Street

North on Sherbourne to Dundas Street

East on Dundas to Jones Avenue (we can check conditions of Bertmount Avenue to go south but it wasn't very clear when I rode it today)

South on Jones Avenue to Queen Street East

West 1 block on Queen Street

Arrive at Bobette & Belle

I would like a concensus on what you feel is too cold to ride.
Based on the current forecast I'm on the side of the fence to keep the ride for this Sunday - I would like your thoughts.
Please remember I will make my final decision to hold the ride on Sunday morning and post here

lol, I rode in -15 and after 5 minutes, my eye laces were frozen. I put glasses on the next time but they always get fogged up. Was there actually snow when you guys rode?

Just back from a morning ride and I must say this is weather skiers dream of. Its a crisp cold, not biting, layers are a good idea but the road conditions are great(for winter) and the radar shows clear airs until at least 1pm. We can discuss if you all still want to go to the second scheduled destination if the weather changes drastically; until then I will be at the corner of Wellesley & Bay at 12:30 - look for the pink and black floral helmet.

I'm seeing -15 w wind chill of -24 morning, and afternoon -9 w WC of -15. Not too bad.

    January 26, 2014

  • Jordan

Factoring in the windchill it will be near minus 30 thats before you even get on the bike ,,,,will feel closer to minus 40 on the bike. Not very pleasant :(

    Hey cyclists!
I'm a wannabe cyclist that lives in the suburbs. I'm considering whether or not I should get a gym membership .

    I personally love being outdoors.

I love my old school vintage looking one speed bike with a basket but hate my bike rack with a passion because its the strappy one that takes two hours??? to set up.

Any comments, suggestions? Maybe I should get a better bike rack. Will cycling lose calories?

Things like this Meetup sounds so fun!

Cycling and proper diet will lose calories But it also depends how much you cycle

The forecast is -11 to -14, not accounting for wind chill factor. I think I will take a rain check based on this info. However, if there is a radical change on the day, then count me in. Otherwise, I look forward to the next event. Dress warm and be safe!

there is no such thing as too cold, just under dressed :P
      But I understand

A couple other things, if you're interested in helping with advocasy for cycling you can join Cycle Toronto - http://cycleto.ca, our ward groups are always looking for volunteers too. I have a facebook page for my ward group as well https://www.facebook.com/#!/cycletorontoward27
