Niagara Bike Winery tour - 160 km - GO Train to Aldershot - Imperial Century!

New Date - Saturday May 24! (Sunday for recovery!)

Lets hope for some sunshine and a nice warm day. The Bike car will most likely not be running, so we won't be able to be a large group on the GO. We also won't be able to sit in a group, but as 4's (2 bikes at the front/back of each car)

Length - 165 km, 100 miles!
Pace - 25-30 km/hr
Temperature - 13-19°C
Route - mostly road, some trails.
Map - http://bit.ly/1kOU0WJ
Road bike recommended - Intermediate or Advanced Riders
Leave Toronto 7:43, arrive Aldershot 8:48.

The route is off the usual Niagara path, but I rode the first part of it last October, and it was a much nicer ride than the usual service roads with the added benefit of winery stops! We'll be passing century homes, and riding through various small communities that speckle the landscape between Hamilton and Niagara.

I'm hoping to lunch in Niagara-on-the-Lake at an old favourite, the Irish Harp Pub, across from the historic Prince of Wales Hotel. There's also the Epicurean for those with a more refined palate that's a block or two away.

Heading back from Niagara, we'll continue to stop off at wineries as time allows and I hope to be back at Aldershot around 7ish, with a dinner at Hutch's Grill around 5:45-6:00 pm.

At the end of the day, we should have ridden 100 miles, and can enjoy the train back to Toronto and have Holiday Monday to rest up from any aches or pains.

Please make sure that your bike is tuned up and ready to ride!!! Dropping out will be problematic - you'll have to rely on GO bus service, and it's hourly, with only room for 2 bikes on the front rack and possibly 2 in the luggage compartment. If the forecast is for cold weather or rain, I will reschedule two weeks Saturday.

There was a lotta ass draggin' yesterday... Thanks to all who came out and to Michael for organizing. We had a PERFECT day. 2 breakdowns happened simultaneously but it was a welcome break in the middle of Drudge (Wind Tunnel) - it was also good practice changing a flat on the road. We really could not have had a better day.
Amit, Ted, hope you guys made it back to Aldershot without any issues. We got to Burlington with 10 minutes until the train.
Next century June 28th/29th or 30th? I definitely want that extra day on a long weekend for post recovery chores.

Hey Greg. Ted and myself are running a bit late. We were driving regardless. If you guys have left Aldershot by the time we get there we will meet you on the route at some point.

Kewl. We wait for you. Just 2 of us here.

Is anyone on the waiting list "pushing the luck" and trying to take any spots left?

I hope that this trip will be run again when the bike car is in operation.

    May 23, 2014

Typically we'll do century rides on long weekends. I reckon there will be one on June 28th or 29th for the Canada holiday. There's an off chance of a metric century but i don't think it's on anyone's radar at the moment.

      May 23, 2014

  • Michael C.

Ladies and Gentlemen, due to some health issues, I cannot lead this ride. I have been improving steadily, but not enough to ride 100 miles. Greg will be leading this one, and I hope to be back in the saddle by mid-June, and heading to Niagara come July.

    May 23, 2014

    • Greg

Get well soon mate! Folks, I'll be riding a green Miele. I recommend earlier folks board at the west end of the train so any latecomers can get on at the east end. I doubt weather will be an issue but will do a final check tonight before 9PM in case today's forecast carries over. I'll also try and print some extra copies of the route but try and download it and/or print a hard copy before tomorrow.

      May 23, 2014

  • Greg

G'day. Weather is looking great for tomorrow. There's a max of 4 bikes per train car so best to plan to be on the platform by 07h30 when the train arrives as we'll probbaly need to spread out. If anyone will be joining at a later stop let us know so we can keep an eye out for you.

    May 23, 2014

  • David B.

I'm getting a ride with Amit and Ted and we'll meet everyone at the start. That should free a couple spots for the Go train.

    1 · May 23, 2014

  • Cynthia J

How long is the wait list now?

    May 22, 2014

    • Greg

There's not a proper wait list. It's more of an indicator how many spots we will take on the train since they are not running a bike car.
There are some folks carpooling so hopefully everyone can come.

      May 22, 2014

  • Greg

G'day. Michael is probbaly not going to make it this weekend so I'm standing in for him. I will not change any itinerary details - except for the pace. I'm reckoning we will be closer to 20 but on these long rides we usually split into go/slow groups around the halfway mark.
The forecast looks good so there probably wil lnot be a rain delay. If you have any questions, best to PM me direct as i won't have time to login again until late this evening.
For Saturday, I will be boarding the train at Union.

    May 22, 2014

  • Amit

I will be taking my name off of the list and driving to the meeting point. Leave a spot for someone who is taking the train.

Considering next weekend's ride, for those who are on the waiting list, can anyone drive and take passengers and their bikes? Please reply to this post with your general location and number of people you could carry. Thanks.

I'm just curious if anyone is making their way to Union GO station from Markham and wondering if carpool is an option? Unfortunately I don't have a car!

    May 18, 2014

  • Michael C.

Ladies and gentlemen, GO is running the Niagara Excursion train this weekend, May 16 to 19. Unfortunately, I am away with family this weekend. Does someone want to step forward to lead a century ride to Niagara Falls this weekend?

    May 12, 2014

Cynthia and I would have loved to ride with you but we have other plans.

Hope to join. Sounds fun :) I'll on the wait list :/

    April 19, 2014

  • Lorimer L.

My only concern maybe as a group is the revised earlier date of April 24. Roughly in 3 weeks time. That's 4 weeks early. Though I've been training indoors the whole winter, it's only last Sunday that I was able to ride outside.
Not sure about the 160kms in 3 weeks time , but then again, I will take the challenge.
It's a group ride so I will go what the group decide.

    April 2, 2014

    • Michael C.

I'm an idiot. It was supposed to be for MAY 24. My apologies!!!

      April 3, 2014

  • Mike

Looks like I'm going down on May 18th. Bonus: it coincides with the big Food Truck Eats event at Peller Estates! I changed my RSVP to open up the spot to somebody on the wait list.

    April 3, 2014

  • charlie

A pass for me. I took myself off the wait list.

    April 2, 2014

  • Lorimer L.

Hi all, if ever some will car pool, right now I can say that I can fit max 5 bikes on my highlander that includes my bike. However if the group decides to take the train, I'm fine with that. I guess we'll see when it gets nearer to the date.
Also, I like the idea that Michael will be doing training rides. I'm all for that.

    1 · March 25, 2014

    • Michael C.

For training, Andy's Wednesday Port Credit Rides are fantastic. I'll be at as many as possible. Regarding Car Pooling, 2 weeks before the date, we'll see who can drive and meet us at Aldershot.

      April 2, 2014

  • Michael C.

I've had to revise the date - I'll be out of town the long weekend.

I would love to go, but cannot keep up with a 30 km avg, maybe 25, so suppose I should not sign up??? Also where is Aldershot? I would get on at Oakville

      March 25, 2014

I too am on the wait list, and I can meet the group in Aldershot
As Irene Rose also mentioned I am not sure if this will change my status on the wait list

    March 25, 2014

  • Irene R.

I am on the wait list but I would meet the group in Aldershot and I do not need to have a space on the GO train to Aldershot. I am not sure whether that changes my status on wait list

    March 18, 2014

  • charlie

I'm not sure if I can maintain 25-30 km pace, but I would still like to go. Hope the weather cooperates.

I'm with Judy - I suppose we're not stopping for any wine tastings ;) Different meet-up, right?

    February 26, 2014

    • Michael C.

We are absolutely stopping for tastings. At least 4

      2 · February 26, 2014

  • Michael C.

For those interested in joining us, please rsvp to the wait list. I'm going to open a dialogue with GO transit starting March 1, to see if we can't get a temporary bike car set up to Aldershot for the morning train! If that happens, we can probably accommodate 25-30 easily!

    February 20, 2014

    • Jeff K

You will be fine Judy, it will be the first real ride of the season for all of us nobody will be keeping track.

      February 21, 2014

    • Michael C.

If you're riding 40 on flat you'll do great. The route is almost completely flat unless we do some hill climbing in the bench.

Is it possible to go only to NIagara and then get a Train Back? I am not sure if I can make 160k in one day... If yes, what is the distance if I only go to Niagara?
    Thanks a lot! =)

    February 19, 2014

    • Michael C.

You'll have to look into via. GO is most likely not running a Niagara excursion train that weekend. Split the total distance in half, Add an extra 20 km to get to the Niagara train station. I'll be doing other Niagara rides this year, This one is only for those willing to do the 160 km
