Red Bull Race the Place

Apparently the first time Ontario Place will be open again to the public since its closure in 2011 will be for this urban bike race. Even if you don't participate ($30 from the link on their site) this should be pretty cool to watch (spectating is free). An alleycat race through Ontario Place, how awesome is that?

I (perhaps quite cynically) think the only reason spectators were not allowed into the park was due to the high cost of providing sufficient security staff to keep people from wandering where Ontario Place doesn't want them to. ('Cause, of course, the general public is no better than 3-year-olds and needs to be treated similarly.) The fight between the Red Bull event hype machine vs. Ontario Place bureaucracy sadly didn't fall the way fans would have liked it to. That said, I think the race itself was amazing, and as a rider I enjoyed the course immensely. I'm still looking for videos from the many GoPros on the circuit, but in the meantime here is the "official" post-race report: http://www.redbull.com/ca/en/bike/stories/1331646454417/vis-takes-victory-at-red-bull-race-the-place

I think that it was a HUGE MISS from a "cool event" perspective. The fact that the Ontario Place grounds were not accessible was so very disappointing. I anticipate that the decision was one that was forced due to some govt regulation. Having the only viewing place at the finish sucked. I HOPE HOPE HOPE that this event was truly just a starting point and it will change next time..... Being an OldSkool fella who rode the old AlleyCat Scramble, the thing about an event like this should be for spectators to set up, settle in and watch from wherever they'd like. Think of it as how Rally Driving spectators or the Valpariso Downhill...... Those are the standards from which to watch....

    Hey Redbull, YA LISTENIN????? hahahaha

I was happy the course was close to the public. It was very tight and technical im sure many spectators would have been hit trying to make the way around the course

Have you seen Valpariso? San Fran? Etc, etc???? Yes the course was tight and technical in spots, I agree. My point is that there is also a TON of real estate available to sit n watch..... It was a huge miss logistically. Hopefully the next time (in a new venue as OP will be gone or designated for condos) they will have a better solution for spectators..... Do you remember the Alleycat????

I think placing speed bumps right before the finish line was a terrible idea.

    April 20, 2014

    • Jordan

Nothing wrong with the bumps people just didnt know how to ride them

I saw at least five cyclists go down within one hour. It's hard to be flippant about it when you see that amount of hurt.

Post in the comments if you sign up to race and then we'll cheer for you. Well, I won't, only because I'll be busy racing, but everyone else will!

Once more, Red Bull shows why they OWN alt/extreme sport. They are the only brand out there that has my vote of cred.

As for the event, it will be amazing. Takes me back to the days of The Alleycat!!! THAT was an epic time for urban riding!!!

I'm also considering racing this but I'm in horrible shape due to school, previously broken neck, and laziness. :|

Fred, this will give you a chance to get out there with a field of guys and girls and ride your heart out. I think you'll surprise yourself. I've been feeling like I'm in ass form, too, but I'll be out there having a great time (in the forecast rain!)

I'm definitely not going to this now. I have to take my sister to the airport the next day, and I need at least two fill days of study time. :'( Have fun out there guys!

Is this event to maybe meet up before hand and ride over together and watch?

    April 12, 2014

    • Jordan

Not for me. I have to be there for 7am :(

      1 · April 12, 2014

ill be racing. The format is everyone does a TT to qualify and depending how your time is will determine where your your place on the start line for the finals will be. The finals will consist of 80 riders

Oh wow, this would put my SLR and HD camcorder to great use.

Doubt I'm suitable to compete since I don't own a helmet or safety gear, am not in shape these days, and ride a bmx with pegs.
