Ride to Port Credit with High Park climb

This week moved to Thursday due to storms on Tuesday


Returning visitors report that this ride gets easier every time they do it. Especially the Ellis Park switchback! : )

Join us for our weekly evening workout ride through picturesque High Park and along the scenic Waterfront Trail.

This is a workout ride with some steep climbs and a good deal of distance, especially for a week night! Fantastic for keeping in shape and steadily increasing your cycling ability.

Make sure to dress for the cooler evening weather and have a light on your bike since it will be well after dusk when we return.

We'll start south of the Princess Gates, go along the watefront, do a lap of Climbing High Park before journeying on to Port Credit along the waterfront trail.

Starting Location: http://goo.gl/maps/M8DST We depart at 6:45pm, no later.

Average speed: We'll tailor the speed to the abilities of the participants, with a minimum average speed of 20km/h. I'd prefer to aim for 25km/h and last year we had some groups that did 30km/h, but the overarching goal is for everyone to enjoy participating in the ride.

Average meaning that we'll predominantly go above the given speed and sometimes below it; with stopping and starting we'll average at least 20km/h. If 20km/h is a top speed for you, then this ride may be too challenging for you. If riding only 20km/h is frustrating for you, then this ride may be too slow for you. Our aim will be for a 25km/h average.

Route: We'll ride along the Waterfront Trail as much as possible. The High Park section is very steep at times. While going along Lakeshore Rd through Mimico would be faster, the trail is more scenic.

We sprint along the Martin Goodman recreational trail until Ellis Ave (~5km) at 30+ km/h, then on the High Park segment (~12km) we average about 16 km/h or so, slowing significantly on the climbs. The ride out to Port Credit (~20km) goes at around 26 to 30 km/h through the paths and side streets of the Waterfront Trail. Then the return trip from Port Credit (~16km) is an all out drag race where we splinter off into different groups based on performance. The slowest group would go about 26 km/h, the fastest about 36 km/h, on the way back. 

We regroup before and after High Park, at the Starbucks in Port Credit and finally on the Humber bridge at the conclusion of the ride, so slower riders can easily catch up. If you can average over 25km/h you should be okay on this ride.

Terrain: The High Park section is very steep at times. Some riders may need to dismount and walk to the crest of a couple of hills. The rest of the ride is extremely flat, since it follows the shore of the lake.

Road Surface: The ride is completely on paved roads and is suitable for all types of bikes. The most important thing is to have your bike be in good working order, smoothly shifting and brakes not sticking. However, if you have knobby tires you should expect it to take a great deal more effort to make the trip out to Port Credit than those people on road bikes or hybrids.

Weather: The ride will proceed unless it is already raining steadily at start time. If there are intermittent showers that will not stop the ride. It is possible that the road surface will be still be wet in some parts of trails so please don't wear your newest all-white cycling outfit if you don't want it getting dirty.

Recommended items to bring:

• LIGHTS! We finish the ride between 9:30 and 10:00pm, at which time it is dark out, and you still need to get home safely.

• Jacket/arm warmers! It gets cold fast at night; shivering on your way home feels miserable. Being wet and cold and shivering is doubly miserable.

• Snack/money! We push the pace a little bit, so you may want to fuel up at the pit stop.

• Glasses and/or face mask! Yes, there are mosquitoes. Millions of them. You will definitely eat several. (Clear) glasses will help you keep them out of your tear ducts, unless you enjoy that sort of thing.

      I still don't see the rain here in Liberty Village but the forecast keeps getting more grim. If it starts to rain by 6 then we'll consider it postponed. If not, we'll decide on the road.

      I bought one from u haul and installed it myself. My bike rack is from 1 Up USA. Amazing rack but a bit pricy compared Canadian tire but much better quality. Also, IMHO, better quality than similar or more expensive racks from task attack
