Century Ride to Niagara, Wine tastings, falls at night & more (25km/hr min.)

Lets start summer 2014 in style with a long day of cycling, capped off with wine tastings, dinner in Niagara Falls, and viewing the falls at night. It was my favourite ride last year, and I can't wait to do it again.  The big difference from the typical Niagara ride is that we will be eliminating the service roads entirely, and biking along scenic Queenston/Main road through the Niagara bench.  We'll be passing century homes, orchards & wineries.

We'll eave Toronto at 7:30 from the Humber Arch Bridge and push onto Port Credit Starbucks for breakfast. We'll make several scheduled stops and I anticipate arriving in Niagara-on-the-Lake at 5:00 p.m. We can visit some wineries, and then head up to Niagara Falls for Dinner. I'd like to be in the falls before 7:00 p.m. (dusk) and have dinner at Milestones by the falls. (It was awesome last year) We'll have a leisurely dinner, and bike over to the falls for night viewing.

Part 2 to Niagara Falls

For those who don't wish to catch the 10:30 train, there's an 7:20 train that will get you back to Toronto for 9:30 pm.

This ride is for experienced cyclists with good equipment. If you're not able to bike 25 - 30 km/hr you will have to proceed on your own. There will be plenty of drop out points where you can catch transit back to Toronto if you run into mechanical or health problems. I'll give out my cell phone via email a day before the ride, if you run into problems, please text me. I'd like to keep stops to a minimum and to what's listed on the map/below. Also, if you want to join the ride at a point other than the start, humber bridge, or Port Credit, let me know where to expect you.

Speed:
25-30 km/hr

Length:
160 km - 100 miles.

Terrain:
Mostly Flat, 1 up-hill before Niagara Falls.

Inventory:
Road Bike Recommended
Head Light & Tail Light
Helmet
Sunscreen
Water
Snacks - power bars, trail mix, etc.

Costs:
$20.65+ for return GO train fare,
$5 per winery that you plan to taste at, (approx.)
Dinner $$$ The Milestones is a bit more expensive than Toronto Milestones.

Itinerary
7:30 Depart From Humber Bridge
8:45 Port Credit Starbucks
9:15 Depart Starbucks for Oakville
10:30 regroup at Oakville Starbucks - 146 Lakeshore Rd W, Oakville
10:45 Depart for Burlington Lift Bridge
11:45 Arrive Burlington Lift Bridge
12:30 Arrive Hutch's on the beach - early lunch of grease.
1:15 Depart for Puddicombe Winery area - may bypass entirely
1:30 Niagara Bench
4:00 Arrive at Port Dalhousie. ** Drop out point for St. Catherine's Train @ 7:45**
4:15 depart for N-o-t-L
5:00 Arrive Niagara-on-the-lake
** Those wishing to catch the 7:20 train back to Toronto should head to Niagara Falls Station directly

5:15-6:00 visit 1 or 2 other wineries (Peller is open until 9, most close at 6)

7:00 Niagara Falls - We'll take the bike path up the escarpment, it's a much better slope than the road down at Queenston heights.
7:30 Dinner @ Milestones
9:15 bike over to the falls, oooh and aaah
10:15 back to Niagara Falls Via Station for the GO train
10:30 Depart on the train back to Toronto, hopefully arrive before 12:30

Thanks Michael. Another great ride. I really liked the new route with the winery stops. Good pace. Oh, and thanks for the ordering the perfect weather too. (what wind ?) Great Apres and ride home on the train.

Uploaded a bunch of pics, but only a couple of them are what I'd call "keepers". (but the others are good for reminders of places we stopped)

    June 28, 2014

For the distance involved a mountain bike would not be practical. A Road bike for the speed and time is the appropriate bike.

See you in Port Credit around 8:45a.

Anyone ever successfully mounted a kryptonite mini lock bracket? I am close to throwing the whole thing out of the window.....

    June 27, 2014

    • David B.

I might bring my cable lock, I have no place to room to mount my u-lock. Andy, are you bringing a lock?

      June 27, 2014

    • Vanessa

I have managed to stick it on at the slight expense of my saddle bag. Just hope it all stays together!

      June 28, 2014

  • Andy Z.

If there are any takers, I will lead a faster, pace-lined group along a slightly more challenging route. 30-35 cruising speed, plus an extra escarpment climb. Zero to one wineries, and then we'll meet up with the main group at Milestones for the evening dinner. We'll match the pace of Mike's group until the Port Credit Starbucks but then take off.

    June 27, 2014

    • David B.

I'll try to join you but my back wheel seems to have a little friction slowing me down. I'll see tomorrow if I can keep up. By the way, I'll pick up my jersey another day. I might be busy Sunday too.

      June 27, 2014

  • Judy P

do we need to print directions or do we all stay together Michael?

    June 27, 2014

    • Jim I

Hi Judy. From my personal experience, a group ride like this has riders of varying abilities and speeds and the group will occasionally get spread out a bit. Michael (and others) does a good job of trying to keep the group together and regrouping when the group gets spread out. That said, especially in a trip of this length, I always try to be as independent as possible reviewing the route in advance, and either having a hard copy of the route or be able to access it electronically in the event I get separated. Hope this helps.

      June 27, 2014

    • Michael C.

I have printed cue sheets as well as some of last year's maps that stick to the traditional Niagara Route. But please familiarize yourself with the route and print your own set as mine are extremely brief and rough.

      June 27, 2014

  • Jane

Michael where's your first coffee stop, just in case I get to the bridge?

    June 27, 2014

Can I still attend this ride if I am on a Waitlist? I've never done 100km before but I've done 60km.... Hopefully, I'll be ok...

    June 26, 2014

    • Judy P

      It is 100 miles Brian, not 100 k, which is 160 k.

      June 27, 2014

    • Greg

Yes Bhav, feel free to join. The wait list is posted for this ride as there are a limited number of spots for bikes on the train. It's not yet been an issue however we should plan to get to the platform well early just in case.

    June 27, 2014

      Im form Eglinton and Brimley.

      June 27, 2014

  • Jim I

I'm up to doing this again ... but this time not on my mountain bike :)

I'll be coming from Oakville. I might backtrack 17k and pick up the group at 8:45am at the Port Credit Starbucks (that is ... if I get on the road early enough).
(Michael - I'll text your cell in the morning to let you know where I plan to meet you - Port Credit or Oakville)

The best place to stop in Oakville is at Starbucks - 6 streets west of downtown (and the 16 mile creek bridge). The address is 146 Lakeshore Rd W, Oakville. There's lots of parking (if anyone else wants to start from there), and it has good rest room facilities.

I just saw this event tonight by chance so just RSVP'd. Being 10th on the waitlist kind of makes planning hard. I might have to "bandit" the ride as my Plan B.

I plan on taking the 7:20p train back also (perfect timing getting me back into Oakville at 8:55)

    June 24, 2014

    • David B.

A lot of people cancel last minute so just plan that your going. Also, there should be more room on the train if group takes 2 different Go trains. I'm planning on taking 7:20 go train back too.

where exactly is the starting point?? I live in Mississauga, but want to do the full 160 so will meet at the start but not sure where that is

    June 16, 2014

    • David B.

The exact coordinates of the starting point: 43°37′55″N 79°28′16″W . Open up Google maps and search those coordinates. Click directions and enter your location. And then use parkingrepublic.com to find closest free parking.

      June 16, 2014

What route will you be taking?

    June 12, 2014

    • Joe S

Check the description. There are two Google maps of the route.

      June 13, 2014

  • Neale

Why is there a 25 limit? The train can take more, the restaurants can take more, the road can take more.

    June 9, 2014

    • Michael C.

Hi Neale, this is the first day the bike cars will be on the Niagara train. I'm expecting a huge turnout of bikers eager to ride around Niagara. I probably will increase the reservation towards the date of the ride, with the expectation that later additions may not be able to find space on the train

      1 · June 9, 2014

    • Neale

Given that there's a mix of people taking different trains, I would think that it should be fine. I've also done this ride before with a larger group, and we all got our bikes on the train - they had to make some special arrangements but we all got on.

      June 9, 2014

  • julian

Sorry guys. I won't be able to make the ride. I have changed my RSVP to allow someone to take my spot.

    Julian

    June 9, 2014

  • Judy P

I thought I posted this, but dont see it, what do people do with their bikes - I am guessing nobody can see them from inside Milestones. and of course no locks are brought along?

    June 2, 2014

    • Judy P

so we all need to carry a lock with us? I would have to get one so what kind because the one I have is a hard one to break through but too big and heavy to take along

      June 3, 2014

    • David B.

Judy, perhaps a cable lock will do, one that has a holder that attaches to your bike. I'm not sure how safe it will be, I haven't gone on Niagara trip yet. Maybe we can keep an eye on the bikes through a window.

Enjoyed last year but not certain our legs can do the whole ride this early in the season. Can we join up with you in Burlington. Bill and I can join there and go on to Niagara Falls.

Can you put me on wait list. I've done a ride to Alliston, Barrie and Burlington so far this year. This ride sounds like fun. I think it's doable for me. Probably logged 1500 km so far this year.

    May 28, 2014

  • Judy P

I have a question - since we will be all sweaty in road bike wear after riding all day - are they going to let us into Moxie's like that?? I don't want to carry clothes on a road bike.

    May 27, 2014

Hmmm, I remember Michael and a few others were 'elite athletes' and barely worked up a sweat on this ride! :)
