CANCELLED: Canada Day Ride - Out to Oshawa

Sorry folks, but the forecast is still 70% chance of thunderstorms in the late morning to mid afternoon, and that`s too high a risk, especially as we`ll be in plenty of areas with no cover. I hate to do it but i`m cancelling the ride. Sorry. I`ll re-schedule this ride in a few weeks. Have a good Canada Day.

Donald

One of my favorite rides is to take the Waterfront Trail out to Oshawa. Most of it is on dedicated bike trails next to the lake, or on quiet residential streets, with some great scenic portions, especially around Ajax and Rouge Hill.

The plan is to ride out to Oshawa from Kennedy subway station (we'll also be going thru the Eglinton GO station parking lot if you want to meet us there), and ride out as far as the Oshawa GO station (about 65 km), then take the GO train back into the city.

We'll start this ride from the Kennedy Subway Station, the SOUTH parking lot, at 10:00 AM. From there we ride a short way along Eglinton to the SOUTH parking lot of the Eglinton GO station (picking up anyone who wants to, say, drive there), and then get on the Waterfront Trail for the ride out to Oshawa.

The ride will mostly be on trails and quiet streets, there will be two short sections on a busy road. The ride can easily be done an a road bike. I'm looking at a pace in my usual 20 -22 km/hr range. Be advised that the route is full of twists and turns (map is available at the Waterfront Trail website at http://www.waterfronttrail.org/) and not well marked so you will need to keep with the group if you don't want to get lost. If you want to go on ahead or fall behind you will be on your own.

Once we get to Oshawa we can take the GO train from there back to the city (the trip is less than an hour back to Eglinton Station, it's about $8), or people can backtrack if we feel like it. We'll be passing GO stations the entire way out if people feel like dropping out. We can have lunch in Pickering, which will be about half-way there.

Feel free to email me about the ride if you have any questions. I'll be checking the weather and I'll send out an advisory in the days beforehand if it looks like the weather might be bad.

My cell is[masked]-7019.

This is a great ride so please try it out!

This was very annoying.. Was planning for this ride only to find out that at 8;30pm it was cancelled due to 70% POP... (Which is understandable)... Weather turned out to be beautiful today (with not a drop in sight) and would have liked to join Donald's ride at 3;30pm but I have plans for dinner at 6;00pm... (The 10am start time would have been much nicer!!!).... Argh.. Frustrating... but Donald did the best he can in this type of situation...

@Judy: It DID rain in the west end in the morning.

I still went for a long bike ride. It did rain for 10 minutes at 10:15am downtown Toronto but cleared up after. And I would say more often than not, people misread the weatherman, not weatherman misread the weather.

Of course the weather has turned out to be decent after all. ARGH!!

I'm still going to reschedule this, but if anyone has time today for an impromptu ride starting from Kennedy at 3:30 - 4 PM, TEXT me at[masked] and I'll meet you at kennedy.

Has a decision been made about cancelling/postponing the ride? Latest forecast is that there will be thunderstorms from 12:00 until 3:00.

The weather is not looking good at all this morning. I'll post this evening with a final go/no-go but it's looking very likely now that I'll have to reschedule the ride.

Can we finish this ride in the morning and get back by noon?

      June 30

    • Donald S.

I`ve cancelled the ride, there`s absolutely no chance we could do it in the time you suggest.

Hi Donald. have you made a decision if the ride is on or off tomorrow? thanks.

  • Donald S.

The forecast is still 70% chance of thunderstorms from the late morning to the mid-afternoon, so I`m cancelling the ride. It`s too big a risk in the open country we`ll be going thru. Sorry. I`ll reschedule the ride in a few weeks. Have a good Canada Day.

The weather forecast for Tuesday isn't very promising, but there's still plenty of time for it to change. I'll be keeping an eye on it and posting on Monday. I don't mind showers but thundershowers are something else. Cross your fingers.

    Sounds interesting!
What type of bike do you prefer?
Looking forward to join the trip!

I ride a hybrid. You can do the ride with either a hybrid or road bike.

If you are a stronger rider you might want to use a mtn bike to make it a bit of a challenge

I live across from Coronation Park. Instead of meeting at the Kennedy Station, could I join you at some point along the waterfront trail?

  • Spencer V.

How far is it ? There, and back, or there, and bus back ? Thanks !

    June 16

    • Donald S.

Going out and taking the train back is 65-odd km. If you want to bike out and then back, the GO stations are roughly 10 km apart if you don't want the bike the entire way back.

Last year I biked there and back. It was 128km for me, I took mostly road on the way back and I biked from my home so probably 25km was biking to and from Kennedy station. I'm not sure if I can make it this year.

Canada Day they normally close the section of Waterfront Trail from the east end of the boardwalk that runs from Liverpool Rd. because of the fireworks setup in Alex Roberson Park. The alternate route is to continue straight ahead as you come off Front Rd onto Annland St. follow it around to the left and turn right on Shearer Ln. then turn right on Balaton Ave. then tun left on Colmar Ave. Then right on Parkham Cres. to Sandy Beach Rd. and turn right. There will be lots of people and the road will be closed for Canada Day celebration but you can ride down Sandy Beach and rejoin the trail on the left side at the end of road.

    June 25

    • Donald S.

I was actually planning on going down Sandy Beach, so this shouldn't be an issue. Thanks for the heads up.

Would love to join but I am not sure I can keep up the 22km/hr range. :(

    • Donald S.

Give it a try, you can always drop out at one of the GO stations we pass if you decide to.
