67 Kilometres of Scarborough Hills

I know a lot of people enjoy climbing, so how about an approximately 67-kilometre ride featuring some of Scarborough's best hills?  Here's the route I have planned:

Stage 1: 10.1 kilometres from East end of Martin Goodman Trail at Silver Birch Avenue to South end of Brimley Road via Waterfront Trail with a side trip on Fallingbrook Crescent/Drive/Woods.
Stage 2: 14.7 kilometres from South end of Brimley Road to Highland Creek via Waterfront Trail.
Stage 3: 11.5 kilometres from Highland Creek to East end of Twyn Rivers Drive via Highland Creek Trail, Old Kingston Road, Military Trail, Conlins Road, Gatineau Hydro Corridor, and Sheppard Avenue.
Stage 4: 7.9 kilometres from Twyn Rivers Drive to Waterfront Trail via Sheppard Avenue and Port Union Road.
Stage 5: 22.9 kilometres back to the event's starting location via Waterfront Trail.

All the hills on this route are paved, but there are a few short sections of bumpy unpaved flats.  Wide and/or studded tires shouldn't be needed, but feel free to bring whatever type of bicycle you wish.

My hybrid will limit my ride average to a maximum of about 25 kilometres per hour.  I'm perfectly content riding slower, and anyone wanting to go faster is free to break apart from the group.  This isn't a race, and I plan to do a head count atop each hill to ensure we haven't lost anybody.

Everyone is responsible for supplying their own bicycles, helmets, sunscreen, food, refillable water bottles, et cetera.  There are several bathrooms and drinking fountains along the route, plus other amenities like transit stops and places to buy food.  I'll point these out on the ride, but feel free to request a stop at any time.  It's a very scenic route, so photography stops are welcome too.

We'll meet at 10:00 (10:00 AM), and then begin our ride at 10:30 (10:30 AM).  This should give everyone plenty of time to do mechanical checks and use the facilities.  Depending on a number of factors, I'm guessing the ride will finish around 14:00 to 15:30 (2:00 PM to 3:30 PM).

For anyone needing to leave early, we will be near Rouge Hill GO Station at the end of stages 2 and 4.  A single-ride adult GO train ticket from Rouge Hill to Danforth GO Station costs $5.45, or $6.25 to Union Station.  Danforth GO Station is about 3 kilometres North of the starting location, and less than 300 metres South of Main Street TTC Station.

Challenging but interesting route. I did not realize that it would become a cyclo-cross event. AJ worked hard to keep the group together; thanks, AJ!

Which part was off road? I'm just curious.

    • A.J.

With the exceptions of the metal bridges (Highland Creek and Twyn Rivers Drive), this route has four unpaved sections, all along the Waterfront Trail:

      1. Harrison Properties (Springbank Avenue to Lakehurst Drive).
      2. Bluffer's Park (Undercliff Drive to Brimley Road).
      3. Guild Park (Livingston Road to Guildwood Parkway).
      4. Greyabbey Park (Greyabbey Trail to Copperfield Road).

I failed to climb that side the first time I tried it too. I discovered those hills accidentally when I decided to try riding Sheppard in Pickering to Sheppard in Toronto. I was carrying too much stuff that day, and had to hastily dismount part way up. Now that you know what to expect, you'll get it.

  • A.J.

Wow, thanks for all the positive feedback! A Brimley sized thank-you is needed for everyone who came to today's event. Everybody was awesome! Best of all: there were no fatalities! And we've evidently mastered the arcane craft of weather wishing.

To the two people who disappeared after the first big hill: I'm sorry we lost you! I rode back, but couldn't find you, so I'm hoping you managed to enjoy a great day of riding.

The ride will proceed as planned! Our weather wishing powers are proving triumphant!

According to the weather forecasts I've read, no precipitation is expected during the hours that our ride is scheduled to take place. The ground may still be wet from the night before, but it shouldn't take long to dry.

So, to everyone able to attend, I'll see you tomorrow at 10:00!

A.J., if you want to add a bit more climbing, we can turn right at Fallingbrook Cres/Drive and go back up Fallingbrook Woods. Nice short but steep little climb. Just a suggestion :)

    July 25

    • A.J.

Great suggestion! I occasionally see people doing laps there, but I've never tried it myself. This totally gets my vote. I've updated the route accordingly.

The current weather forecast for Sunday looks rather unpleasant. If rain and/or lightning remains forecast by Saturday, I will reschedule this event for[masked]

    July 23

    • Allen M.

Don't make it for 8-10. The PGA Championship is being contested on that weekend :(

      July 23

    • A.J.

Vanessa, I did my test run on Tuesday, but if the weather forces me to postpone, I may do another to search for additional bathrooms and drinking fountains. Some company would indeed be fancied!

      R. L., my concern had more to do with the lightning than the rain, although the amount of rain forecast was enough to disguise some rim-bending potholes, make the unpaved sections very messy, and gunk up drive trains.

Allen, I'm hoping that I won't have to postpone, but[masked] is the next available day for me. I can host a repeat at a later date for anyone who's unable to attend that day or who wants to do this again, but before that, I'll be hosting another hilly event elsewhere.

      July 25

  • Connie

I took some time to map out A.J.'s route. It's an interpretation from what I understand and it is *not* accurate.
Here's what the route loosely looks like from the event's description:

Could someone please post a map or a turn-by-turn navigation course of this event? In the past I have lost the group by stopping for a quick mechanical ( less than 60 sec! ) and was never able to catch up again, not because of speed issues, but because I had no clue of the route. This way I can load the course into my phone and make sure that I am familiar with the route beforehand. Thanks

    July 21

    • A.J.

The complicated sections of this ride are the Waterfront Trail portions in stages 1, 2, and 5. I know these sections really well, and almost all of the turns are indicated with Waterfront Trail signage (bird, leaf, and fish). We will adhere to the official route as shown on the Waterfront Trail website: http://www.waterfront...

Given the number of people who have signed up, I'm going to ask at the beginning for an experienced volunteer to ride at the very back of the group. If I lose sight of this person for too long, then I will assume that someone is having problems, and I will pause the ride to make sure everyone is okay. I will also be doing frequent head counts to ensure that we haven't lost anybody.

Again, this isn't a race. If anyone needs/wants to stop at any time, please feel free to speak up.

      July 21

  • R. L. K.

Sounds like an awesome route - thanks for putting this together - looking forward to all the climbing!

    1 · July 16

    • Vanessa C.

Annoyingly it shows that I climbed 200m less even though we are doing the exact same route!

      1 · July 19

    • David B.

Vanessa, I did a few more kms than you but I don't think I did 200m more than you. It's just a little off :P Andy's rides usually have more metres climbed than me. I'm not exactly sure how Garmin determines elevation.

  • Cass S.

Wish I could join you on this ride! It's going to be a good one.

If you're interested in finding out more about the Highland Creek watershed and Scarborough, home to all of these amazing hills, check out our blog: www.highlandcreekconnect.ca. I'm going to post about this ride today.

Also, the ride will go right past the annual Guild Alive with Culture Festival at Guild Park. If you're maybe hungry after climbing all of those hills, I'd recommend stopping in: http://guildpark.ca/events

    July 18

    • A.J.

Wow, thanks, Cass! Guild Park is an awesome spot for a food break between hills.

      July 18

    • Cass S.

No problem. The Highland Creek Green Team will be there with their community event booth. Maybe I'll even meet the group there for the end of the ride. See you in a bit.
