We did this ride back in 2009, and it seemed popular then so we'll try it again now.
This will be a ride designed for the medium to long distance touring enthusiasts among the group. We will ride on rec trails, side streets and some main streets to encricle Toronto in a day.
Starting at York University, we will take a north-easterly course on a mix of main streets and side streets until we eventually reach the top of the Don River Valley trail system. We will follow this rec trail all the way to its southern terminus at Queens Quay, and then head across along the lake shore to the Humber River Valley trail system. (Along this stretch, we will also stop for lunch) We'll proceed up the length of the Humber rec trail and then take a mix of some main streets and side streets until we hop on another rec trail to take us back to where we started near York U.
Alltogether, Bikely.com says this route is 81km. I expect this ride to have an average pace between 20 and 23km/h. (Ie: steep uphill = 15km/h, gradual uphill = 20km/h, level ground = 25km/h, steep downhill = 35-45km/h) For your own enjoyment and that of the rest of the group, please make sure you are able to meet the pace described here before signing up for the ride. At this pace, and accounting for rest stops and lunch, I expect us to make it back to our starting point sometime between 2:30 and 3:30pm.
Don't forget the following: - your bike (in good working order!) - your helmet - wear comfortable and warm clothing - water bottles (filled, but we'll stop to refill!) - food in your pack to keep your energy up - lunch if you don't plan to buy one in downtown Toronto - your cell phone! (if you get separated from the group, we need to be able to reach you) Here are links to view the planned route sections: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/York-U-to-Don-Valley-trail http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Don-Valley-Route http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Connect-Don-Valley-to-Humber http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Up-Humber-River http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/Top-of-Humber-River-trail-to-York-U
