Welcome to The Toronto Classic Film Group. This meetup group was originally founded by Alex Smith in September of 2012 and shortly afterwards Dave Burgess came on board. Showing classic films to like minded classic movie fans has been a labour of love for us since day one. The collection of classic films, especially by Dave, has taken years, and we both take great delight in showing them at various venues around Toronto. Before we actually start a movie we’ll usually introduce it with little bits of fun trivia to get you in the mood. Sometimes we’ll even highlight parts of a film for you to watch for just to add to the experience. After the film we encourage our members to discuss the movie as well either at the venue or someplace close by. We will usually show 2-3 classic movies per month at zero cost to our members. The only time you will have to pay anything is if a venue has a set fee for a meal or if there is a small theater rental which we will all share in the cost. The main goal of The Toronto Classic Film Group is to share a memorable and fun classic film experience with you, our friends and fellow members.
As of April 2014 we will be starting a new Two Tier Membership. One will be a Paid Membership and the other will be a Regular (non-paid) Membership. Please read below.
Paid Members will only pay a maximum of $24 per year if they start from the beginning of the year. If a Paid Member starts in May for instance they will only pay $16 for the rest of the year. This can only be paid in a lump sum as a $2 per month pay as you go would be too difficult to handle. This nominal fee which works out to only $2 per month goes toward meetup administration fees, the setting up and organizing at various venues and the posting and hosting of the film events. It also gives us support which is greatly appreciated. One Main Benefit of being a paid member is that you will get priority seating at a smaller venue that may only seat a smaller number of people. Our meetups will still be on a first come first served basis as usual, so you may want to rsvp soon after a posting in order to get your spot.
To become a Paid Member simply show up to one of our movie meetups and pay Alex or Dave cash. Afterwards your paid membership will be noted next to your picture on your profile.
Regular (non-paying) Members will still be able to see our films for free and will also be on a first come, first served basis, however Regular Members could be bumped to the waiting list by a Paid Member if we reach capacity at a venue.
**IMPORTANT NOTE** A Paid Member cannot bump someone to the waiting list at the last moment. A Paid Member must rsvp at least 24 hours in advance of a movie if Regular (non-paying) Members already have spots. This will avoid any confusion.
**TOUGHER NO SHOW POLICY** We also started the Paid Membership because we figure that if folks are paying even a nominal fee then they will be a little more serious about coming out to our movie meetups. Unfortunately we have had people take limited spots and completely no show our events in the past. This shows a total disregard for our fellow members and is inexcusable. We want to limit this, so we will be monitoring attendance. Members that chronically no show our events may be bumped without notice to a waiting list. This could open the door to a dependable Regular Member who normally shows up and is more deserving.
