THE FRENCH CONNECTION - 1971
Saturday, April 20th we will be showing the 5 time Academy Award Winner, The French Connection. This gritty New York City based film from 1971 won the Best Picture Oscar and Gene Hackman at his best won Best Actor in a leading role.
BASED ON A TRUE STORY
William Friedkin's police drama portrays two tough New York City cops, Popeye and Cloudy, portrayed by Gene Hackman and Roy Scheider, trying to intercept a huge heroin shipment coming from France. An interesting contrast is established between 'Popeye' Doyle, a short-tempered alcoholic bigot who is nevertheless a hard-working and dedicated police officer, and his nemesis Alain Charnier, portrayed by Fernando Rey, a suave and urbane gentleman who is nevertheless a criminal and one of the largest drug suppliers of pure heroin to North America. During the surveillance and eventual bust, Friedkin provides one of the most gripping and memorable car chase sequences ever filmed.
This is one of my (Alex) all time favourites and it has some personal significance for me as well. In 1970 I had my first Summer job inside the Roosvelt Hotel where a portion of the French Connection was filmed. They also filmed a major sequence where I would take the subway home. I can vividly remember how New York looked back in 1970 and this film hits it dead on.
