The Third Man (1949) Orson Welles, Joseph Cotton - Fairview Screening Room - $8



On Saturday, July 13th we will be showing the classic movie The Third Man from 1949. This Film Noir Thriller was written for the screen by Graham Greene and Directed by Carol Reed. The film stars include Joseph Cotton, Orson Wells, Alida Valli, Trevor Howard and look for Bernard Lee (M from the James Bond series of films)

An out of work American pulp fiction novelist, Holly Martins, portrayed by Joseph Cotton arrives in a post Second World War Vienna that’s been divided into sectors by the victorious allies and where a shortage of supplies has lead to a flourishing black market. He arrives at the invitation of an old school friend Harry Lime, portrayed by Orson Welles who has offered him a job, On arrival he discovers that Lime has recently died in a peculiar traffic accident.

He goes to his funeral and sees a beautiful woman Anna Schmidt, portrayed by Alida Valli who he learns was Harry's lover. Also at the funeral is Major Calloway, portrayed by Trevor Howard who is commanding the investigation into Harry’s death. From talking to Lime's friends and associates Martins soon notices that some of the stories are inconsistent, and is driven to discover what really happened to Harry Lime. Soon Martins discovers incredible dark secrets about Lime's life and death.

The movie is a masterpiece of acting, screenwriting, film technique, and a unique zither score by Anton Karas all masterfully blended together to make one amazing film.

Driving - The Screening Room is located at Fairview Mall at the corner of Don Mills Rd. and Sheppard. Since we're all coming from different directions I suggest going to and click on "Get Directions." Your destination address is 1800 Sheppard Ave. East.

Transit - From the Yonge/University Line, Go to Sheppard Station and then take the Sheppard Subway Line to Don Mills Station. From the Bloor/Danforth Subway Line, go to Pape Station and take the #25, Don Mills bus to Don Mills Station. Don Mills Station leads right to Fairview Mall. Free Mall Parking!! Try to park near Shopper's Drug Mart.

Once you're in the mall, go to the 2nd level. The SilverCity Cineplex is between Purdy's Chocolates and Shopper's Drug Mart. At SilverCity, go up the escalator and immediately turn left. From there you will see the lounge and screening room. Dave and Alex will be your hosts.

After the film we can hang together and discuss "The Third Man" in The Screening Room or in The Lounge.
